Job Summary

The Hospice Registered Nurse assesses and provides skilled nursing care to home hospice patients on an intermittent basis. This role is responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, symptom and pain management, care planning, patient and family education, coordination of services, accurate clinical documentation, and communication with physicians and members of the interdisciplinary care team.

Key Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and reassessments, accurately identifying patient care needs and eligibility for hospice services.
Develop, implement, evaluate, and update individualized patient care plans in accordance with physician orders and agency policies.
Provide skilled nursing interventions to address changes in patient condition, including effective pain and symptom management.
Administer medications safely and accurately, including IV piggyback medications, IV pushes, and dosage calculations.
Perform venipuncture, IV administration, sterile dressing changes, and other skilled nursing procedures within scope of practice and policy.
Insert and manage PEG feeding tubes and provide nutritional support according to established policy.
Educate patients and families regarding medications, treatment plans, disease processes, safety, nutrition, and available resources.
Coordinate patient care with physicians, nurses, home health aides, families, and other members of the healthcare team, including participation in care conferences.
Monitor patient condition and promptly communicate significant changes, abnormal reactions, care progression, and other concerns to the appropriate physician or care team member.
Complete hospice admissions and required clinical documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
Ensure patient records accurately reflect the delivery of safe, high-quality home hospice services.
Provide delegation, instruction, and supervision to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and home health aides as appropriate.
Perform supervisory visits of home health aides as assigned.
Respond appropriately and effectively to emergency situations and changes in patient status.
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security requirements.
Demonstrate culturally responsive, compassionate care that respects each patient’s values, beliefs, religion, family needs, and preferences.
Prioritize workload, manage time efficiently, and complete required patient visits and related documentation within department expectations.
Rotate on-call responsibilities with other staff nurses.
Maintain effective communication with patients, families, physicians, coworkers, hospital departments, and community partners.
Participate in orientation of new employees and continuing education activities as requested.
Support NARMC and departmental policies, regulatory requirements, compliance standards, and quality initiatives.
Demonstrate accountability, sound clinical judgment, professional nursing practice, flexibility, and effective decision-making.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Required

Associate’s degree from an accredited nursing school.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure appropriate for practice in Arkansas.
At least one year of previous related healthcare experience.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
Valid Arkansas driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to patient homes.
Ability to assess, evaluate, communicate, and make sound clinical decisions effectively.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Genuine interest in providing compassionate care to older adults and patients with complex healthcare needs.

Preferred

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited nursing school.
Two or more years of previous related healthcare experience.
Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse (HPCN) certification.
Experience in geriatric care, hospice, palliative care, home health, or other related patient-care settings.
Additional clinical certifications or experience such as PICC line, IV therapy, or chemotherapy.
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education, professional development, and self-improvement.

Compensation & Schedule

Compensation is based on applicable NARMC pay practices and experience. This is an intermittent home-based nursing role that requires travel to patient homes and participation in a rotating on-call schedule. Specific scheduling details will be discussed during the hiring process.
