RIGGING & SAFETY TRAINER

Position Summary: Plans, develops, and delivers rigging and lifting safety training to customers at their facilities, at jobsites, and at Hanes Supply training facilities, and periodically trains Hanes Supply associates. Serves as a technical instructor and standards resource whose work strengthens the customer relationship; identifies needs during training and refers them to the assigned sales representative for follow up rather than selling in the classroom. Performs rigging inspections approximately 5% of the time while performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

– Observe all safety procedures, rules and regulations, and instruction in performance of job duties.

– Deliver rigging, sling, hoist, and load-handling training to customers in classroom settings and in hands-on settings within manufacturing facilities and on jobsites.

– Instruct groups of varying size and experience level, holding the attention of the room and adjusting delivery to the audience, the facility, and the customer’s applications.

– Train Hanes Supply associates on rigging standards, product application, and inspection practice as scheduled.

– Teach and work through the calculations used in rigging, including load and sling tension, load angle factors, D/d ratio, weight estimation, center of gravity, and reductions in working load limit.

– Train customer personnel to the level of instruction needed for their employer to designate them as a qualified or competent person.

– Evaluate participant understanding through practical exercises, written assessment, or both, and document the results.

– Develop, maintain, and implement course curriculum, including student materials, instructor guides, hands-on exercises, visual aids, and assessments.

– Revise course content as standards are updated and as new products, procedures, or customer applications arise.

– Maintain training records, attendance rosters, evaluations, and certificates of completion in the established format.

– Maintain working knowledge of and instruct to all applicable standards, including OSHA, ASME, ANSI, WSTDA, Cordage Institute, manufacturer requirements, and internal Hanes Supply procedures and standards.

– Substantiate instruction and inspection decisions through citation of the relevant standard when called upon to do so.

– Maintain certifications and education levels commensurate with the position, including train-the-trainer qualifications, and schedule trainings and exams to support them.

– Deliver training as a value-added service, keeping the session instructional so that participants experience it as education and not as a sales call.

– Identify product needs, application problems, and opportunities observed during training and refer them to the assigned sales representative for follow up after the class.

– Provide feedback to sales on opportunities and jobsite or worksite intelligence, especially in regard to competitive presence.

– Present self in professional manner, both in appearance and attitude.

– Represent the best interests and policies of Hanes Supply while interacting with the customer.

– Establish and control pricing for training with oversight from management, and present pricing, scope, and outline of services directly to the customer rather than through sales.

– Confirm the scope, objectives, audience, and facility requirements with the customer before the training is scheduled.

– Enter orders and prepare quotations for training using the company-provided laptop or tablet.

– Maintain a complete calendar, scheduling customers effectively, tracking recurring and upcoming training, and coordinating with sales to promote the service.

– Schedule air and ground travel and maintain cost effectiveness in the process; manage the assigned expense account in accordance with company policy.

– Operate the assigned company vehicle safely and maintain it in accordance with company policy.

– Perform visual inspections of slings, rigging hardware, and hoists on location at customer facilities, approximately 5% of work time, recording results and presenting them to the customer in the established means and format.

– Communicate with sales and the customer on scheduling, pricing, and replacement of rigging identified during inspection.

– Participate in continuous improvement processes in a team environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

– Must be competent and confident presenting in front of a group, in a classroom as well as on the floor of a manufacturing facility or on a jobsite.

– Must be proficient in developing, maintaining, and implementing course curriculum.

– Must be knowledgeable in applicable rigging standards, including OSHA, ASME, ANSI, WSTDA, Cordage Institute, and internal Hanes Supply procedures, and able to locate and cite them accurately.

– Must possess basic math skills and be able to compute and explain rigging formulas without difficulty.

– Must be qualified or certified in rigging inspection, or able to obtain the qualification, and maintain train-the-trainer qualifications through the applicable vendors.

– Must be knowledgeable and skilled in safety procedures and able to operate safely and efficiently in construction or industrial areas.

– Must have exemplary communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop working relationships at all levels of a customer site, from the shop floor to management.

– Must be able to maintain an instructional rather than a sales posture with customers during training, and know when to hand an opportunity to the sales representative.

– Must possess computer skills sufficient to build course materials and enter orders and quotations on a laptop or tablet (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred).

– Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

– Must have effective time management and planning skills, and be able to manage an independent calendar with oversight from management.

– Must be willing and able to travel approximately 80% of the time, by air and ground. Weekend travel may be necessary at times; the trainer controls their own schedule, with oversight from management, and is expected to arrange it to limit weekend travel where practical.

– Must be able to work effectively from a remote home office with limited day-to-day supervision, and must be available to report to the corporate headquarters in Buffalo, NY periodically as required.

– Must possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for operation of a company vehicle.

Level of Education and Experience:

– High School Diploma or equivalency required;

– A background in training, education, or adult instruction is helpful; a Bachelor’s degree in education, a technical discipline, or a related field is desired.

– Demonstrated experience developing and delivering instruction to adult learners is highly desired.

– Industry, rigging, or construction experience is a plus but is not required.

– Successful candidates will be trained by the Senior Trainer prior to instructing independently.

- Constant: standing for long periods while instructing, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, lifting and carrying <25 lbs.

- Frequent: lifting and carrying 25 lbs. to 50 lbs., pushing, pulling, bending and twisting at waist, kneeling, squatting, crouching, repetitive hand and arm movement, handling and grasping, reaching above shoulder, climbing stairs

- Occasional: driving for several hours, air travel, sitting at a desk for curriculum development, data entry, and quoting

– This is a full remote position. The trainer works from a home office when not traveling and is required to report to the corporate headquarters in Buffalo, NY periodically for meetings, training, product familiarization, and curriculum review.

– Work is performed from a home office and on location in classrooms, customer manufacturing facilities, jobsites, and Hanes Supply training facilities.

– Often exposed to a number of hazards when instructing or inspecting outside of a classroom setting.

– Should wear safety shoes, gloves, protective eye and head protection, and other equipment to prevent injury.

– The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate in a classroom and often loud in manufacturing and jobsite settings.

– Temperatures can vary with the weather/facility.

– Travel is expected to be approximately 80%, including air and ground travel, with overnight stays. Weekend travel may be necessary at times.
