Summary
The Residential Trainer provides direct daily care, supervision, and training to individuals in a residential setting, including assistance with activities of daily living and medical needs. They are also responsible for maintaining facility cleanliness, documenting services, and ensuring the safety and rights of all residents.
Job Description
Function: The Residential Trainer is responsible for the training and care of individuals. The
Residential Trainer is responsible for the direct daily care and supervision of their assigned.
Individuals: including record keeping, safety and other duties as related to the individual’s needs and program plan.
Specific Duties:
1. Direct supervision of assigned individuals, ensuring their safety, and knowing their history, status, and location at all times.
2. Provide training, supervision, and direct care of individuals i.e., self-care, hygiene, eating and other activities of daily living.
3. Responsible for the Range of Motion and Positioning of assigned individuals as instructed by the Physical Therapist.
4. Work cooperatively with the clinical therapist and specialist (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Speech Therapy, Behavior Specialist, etc.), in the implementation of the designed individual program plans.
5. Perform individual lifts and transfers as required by the residents’ physical needs.
6. Monitor and record data on services delivered to individuals and to advocate for any deficiency noted and areas of concern for the assigned individuals.
7. Protect individual rights including immediately intervene and report any suspected abuse and neglect to your supervisor or other authority.
8. Maintain confidentiality of individuals, other employees and the Agency including medical, personnel, financial and other records.
9. Be involved in recreation, crafts, and community experience activities with individuals.
10. Attend medical appointments as assigned. Ensure that all medical documentation is obtained and properly entered into record. Administration of medications provide routine health care and first aid to individuals.
11. Conduct and participate in fire and evacuation drills as required by DDS and Agency Policy.
12. Transport individuals to and from Day Program, recreational trips, church, family visits, medical appointments, etc. adhering to all motor vehicle regulations and ensuring that the vehicle is clean and in good working order. Any concerns regarding the vehicles should be reported in writing to your supervisor.
13. Adhere to all OSHA guidelines including reporting potentially hazardous conditions regarding Universal Precautions/Body Substance Isolation, Hazardous Materials and other Safety Precautions as needed to ensure my safety and the safety of my co-workers, visitors to the home and the individuals.
14. Cover co-worker's vacation, sick time, or other planned/or uninformed absences from work as well as in an emergency.
15. Report any illnesses, accidents, or other incidents to the Supervisor on call or the Supervising RN as required.
16. Always maintain professional conduct, including working cooperatively with other individual staff members and day program personnel and other personnel from the various agencies and maintaining respect for the individuals, fellow staff, supervisory personnel, and visitors to the home.
17. To attain and maintain all required inservice and other staff training as required and/or directed by the Agency, the Program Manager, DDS Policy, including CPR, First Aid, Certification in the Administration of Medication and individual or facility-specific training as needed.
18. Participate in staff meetings, staff inservice and individual review meetings as assigned and/or required. All staff (including relief) are required to attend staff meetings a minimum of once per quarter. Additional meetings may be required based upon individual needs.
19. Always ensure a safe and clean facility. Housekeeping and maintenance duties may include but are not limited to:
a) clean floors with appropriate cleaning products and methods: vacuum rugs and carpets, sweep and mop vinyl, tile, wood, and other hard surface floors, etc.
b) trash removal at the end of shift.
c) cleaning of program equipment.
d) clean kitchen areas: stove, counters, sinks, appliances, cabinets, refrigerator, etc.
e) clean bathrooms: toilets, sinks, mirrors, bathtub, shower, wall tile, floors, and lights, etc.
f) laundry duties as required.
g) snow removal from sidewalks and exits for safety as needed.
h) general cleaning of any other areas as needed or assigned.
i) report any safety or maintenance concerns immediately in writing to your supervisor.
20. To perform all other work or related duties as assigned by the Residence Director or Supervisor on duty.
Job Specifications:
1. This job description applies to all shifts, part-time, relief staff, full time employees and emergency direct care staff. Night staff does have additional specific duties and all staff must remain awake while on duty.
2. Wages are determined by the annual review of operational budgets and approval by CT DDS for rate increases.
Qualifications:
High School diploma required. Experience in direct care of persons with developmental disabilities or other disabilities or education in Human Services or related fields preferred. Must be able to maintain records, perform assigned programs and provide for the full range of individuals’ needs, including the ability to do two-person lift. A valid Connecticut drivers’ license with a satisfactory driving record is also required.
