Job Description
Job Title: Resident Teaching Artist
Department: Arts Education
Reports: Director, Faculty and Curriculum
Status: Part-time, seasonal
Compensation: $73.72 per hour (instructional). All meetings, training, and planning is also compensated at a range of $15.14 to $28.35 per hour.
Position Summary:
Residency Teaching Artists (Residency TAs) are essential members of NJPAC’s Arts Education team. Residency TAs are professional artists and educators who lead instruction in music, theater, hip hop, dance, and other disciplines through residencies at partnering schools. Must have flexible availability Monday through Friday between the hours of 8AM and 5PM to cover teaching opportunities for in-school residencies, after-school residencies, and off-site summer enrichment programs. This role contributes to NJPAC’s mission of delivering high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring arts education experiences. All Residency TAs are required to attend mandatory training sessions and complete program-specific lesson plans using provided templates to ensure alignment with NJPAC’s vision, learning goals, and standards.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in their artistic discipline or a minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction in your artistic discipline(s).

Develop and submit lesson plans using NJPAC’s official templates and in alignment with the curriculum vision outlined during training.

Adjust instruction based on student needs while ensuring goals and outcomes remain consistent.

Collaborate with NJPAC Arts Education staff and school partners to create a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Maintain clear and consistent communication with NJPAC staff and school partners (where applicable).
Professional Expectations:

Availability: Must have flexible availability Monday through Friday between the hours of 8AM and 5PM.

Mandatory Training: Attend required onboarding training and professional development sessions offered by NJPAC, including workshops on lesson planning, equity and inclusion, child safety, and curriculum alignment.

Lesson Plans: All Residency TAs must complete and submit lesson plans using the NJPAC-provided template.

Communication: Respond promptly to emails, scheduling requests, and feedback from NJPAC staff and program leadership.

Professionalism: Represent NJPAC with professionalism, including timeliness, preparation, and appropriate conduct in all program settings.

Equity and Inclusion: Uphold NJPAC’s values of inclusion, anti-racism, and cultural responsiveness in all classroom interactions.

Each year, NJPAC's Arts Education Department, one of the largest in the country, engages almost 80,000 public school children via arts learning initiatives in schools, in NJPAC conservatory, and on its stages. The Arts Center has established itself as a home for broadcast by networks including BET, HBO, Comedy Central, PBS and NBC. NJPAC provides forums for convening New Jersey’s citizenry to discuss significant issues of the day and “symbolizes Newark’s cultural renaissance” (Forbes magazine).
