Salary Range: Hourly $18.50 to $25.00
Work Schedule This is part-time, non-exempt position; 20 hours/week; Monday – Friday, hours to be determined. This a temporary appointment ending on or before March 31, 2027, with the possibility for renewal, contingent upon the availability of funds.
Position Summary: The Research Technician is responsible for conducting and leading research in biochemistry and/or biological chemistry. The position focuses on investigating the mechanisms, stability, functions, and applications of antifreeze proteins and related systems, with the goal of advancing technologies for the long-term preservation of biological materials.
The Research Technician is responsible for: assisting with laboratory safety and equipment maintenance; assisting with personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; assisting with training of students and volunteer workers; assisting with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment, and with general maintenance of laboratory; implementing research protocols; adapting new procedures, methods, or instrumentation relative to research procedures; collecting, preparing, and analyzing research data; and documenting and summarizing experiments and recording research data.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Research Technician is responsible for assisting with laboratory safety and equipment maintenance; assisting with the coordination of laboratory personnel and research activities to enhance efficiency and productivity; assisting with the training of students and volunteer researchers; assisting with the ordering, procurement, inventory management, and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment; implementing research protocols and experimental procedures; developing and adapting new procedures, methodologies, and instrumentation to support research objectives; collecting, preparing, analyzing, and interpreting research data; and documenting, summarizing, and maintaining accurate records of experiments and research findings.
Minimum Qualifications: The Research Technician must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field. The incumbent must have laboratory experience in the preparation and characterization of antifreeze proteins and their variants (mutants), as well as experience using laboratory instrumentation and analytical techniques, including balances, pH meters, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The incumbent must also demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with individuals from diverse and multidisciplinary backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Extensive laboratory experience working with beetle antifreeze proteins is highly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with technical expertise and a demonstrated record of research productivity, including publications, manuscripts, and/or conference presentations in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, or related fields. Additional preferred qualifications include experience in the preparation and characterization of beetle antifreeze proteins and their variants, as well as experience with advanced analytical techniques such as circular dichroism (CD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment. Individuals with a record of independent or directed research, scholarly publications, manuscripts, and/or conference presentations relevant to the position will receive primary consideration.
The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS.
