Reporter, Local Newsletter (Phoenix)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Local Reporter, Phoenix based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to help build a new kind of local journalism experience for readers across the Phoenix community.
You will report, curate, and create engaging digital storytelling that helps residents understand the forces shaping their region.
Your work will combine original reporting with newsletters, social media, video, audio, data, events, and other formats.
You will develop relationships with readers, local sources, community organizations, and media partners across Phoenix.
The role calls for strong news judgment, audience awareness, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment with new ways of storytelling.
You will collaborate with journalists across locations while having meaningful ownership over the tone, content, and community presence of the local newsletter.
This is an opportunity for an experienced digital storyteller to help shape an evolving local journalism product and deepen connections with its audience.

Accountabilities:

As Local Reporter, you will contribute to the editorial direction, reporting, audience engagement, and continued development of the Phoenix local newsletter.

• Help shape the tone, structure, editorial strategy, and content of the local Phoenix newsletter.
• Identify important and engaging topics, conduct original reporting, and incorporate relevant work from other journalists and sources.
• Monitor local news, media outlets, influencers, and community conversations to identify important stories and showcase high-quality journalism.
• Develop relationships and collaborate with local media organizations and other relevant partners when appropriate.
• Work with colleagues in other locations and central editorial teams to extend the reach and impact of local journalism.
• Experiment with formats including Q&As, features, explainers, data stories, visual presentations, newsletters, video, and other digital storytelling formats.
• Identify opportunities to connect with readers and build community through online engagement, social media, callouts, and in-person events.
• Help develop and maintain the local newsletter's presence across social platforms and experiment with new approaches to audience engagement.
• Monitor emerging approaches used by media organizations and other brands to build communities and strengthen audience loyalty.
• Help establish engagement goals, monitor performance, analyze audience data, and use insights to inform editorial experiments.
• Represent the local newsletter at community and media events and contribute to planning and hosting events.
• Maintain high standards of journalistic independence, accuracy, integrity, and responsible reporting.
• Collaborate with the broader newsletter team and report to the Deputy Editorial Director, Newsletters.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a Phoenix-based journalist or digital storyteller with strong local knowledge, excellent news judgment, and experience engaging audiences across multiple platforms.

• 5+ years of experience in digital storytelling or a related journalism environment.
• Significant experience covering Phoenix and a deep understanding of the region, its communities, media ecosystem, and audience needs.
• Demonstrated strong news judgment and audience-first thinking across breaking news, features, analysis, and enterprise reporting.
• Previous experience working with newsletters and social media, with a strong understanding of how to create engaging digital content.
• Experience with video, audio, data journalism, or other multimedia storytelling is a plus.
• Comfort using analytics tools to identify actionable audience and engagement insights.
• Ability to work across a variety of storytelling formats, including data visualization and video.
• Proven initiative and a track record of developing and delivering digital media projects.
• Strong commitment to journalistic integrity, independence, accuracy, and responsible reporting.
• Collaborative mindset, willingness to experiment, curiosity, and a good sense of humor.
• Established relationships and sources across a range of Phoenix communities and subject areas.
• Broad interests and the ability to communicate complex topics in a clear, conversational, and engaging way.
• Experience as a host for a podcast, newsletter, video series, live event, or similar format is a plus.
• Approximately six work samples should be available, which may include newsletters, videos, traditional clips, or other relevant formats.
