Our Patient Access team is often one of the first points of contact for patients and families during what can be a stressful or uncertain time. We work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment where flexibility, compassion, and teamwork are essential. Registrars work closely with Switchboard and fellow Patient Access team members to keep operations moving while helping patients navigate the registration process. How you’ll contribute  

A Registrar who excels in this role: 

• Provides ER Registration and Patient Access support, serving as an important first point of contact for patients and families entering the hospital.
• Accurately collects and enters patient demographic, insurance, billing, and clinical information into the registration system.
• Verifies insurance information and benefits and assists with authorization requirements as applicable.
• Collects applicable co-pays, deductibles, and other point-of-service payments and refers patients for additional financial assistance when appropriate.
• Explains registration forms, required documents, processes, and other information to patients and family members.
• Communicates with patients, families, clinical staff, physician offices, and other hospital departments to obtain or exchange information needed for timely registration and care.
• Provides compassionate and professional service to patients and families who may be experiencing stressful, urgent, or emotional situations.
• Manages multiple patients, requests, interruptions, and priorities while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
• Works collaboratively with the ER Registration and Switchboard team, assisting teammates as needed to support department operations.
• Maintains knowledge of current registration, insurance, collection, and department processes, including changes communicated between scheduled PRN shifts.
• May provide coverage at Highpoint Health – Winchester and, based on employee availability, Sewanee, with Winchester serving as the primary work location.
• Performs other Patient Access duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for 
Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, required. Additional requirements include: 

• Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress hospital environment.

• Strong time-management, organizational, and multitasking skills.

• Dependable and flexible, with the ability to quickly adapt to changing patient volumes, priorities, and procedures.

• Ability to learn registration, insurance, collection, and hospital processes quickly.

• Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately enter patient and financial information.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a highly team-oriented department.

• Basic computer proficiency required.

• Previous Patient Access, healthcare registration, emergency department, medical office, insurance verification, cash-handling, or high-volume customer service experience is preferred but not required.

• Must be willing to work at the Winchester location; willingness to provide coverage at Sewanee is preferred and may provide additional opportunities for PRN shifts.

• Must be able to successfully complete approximately four weeks of training covering Switchboard, reception, registration, and insurance/collections.

Schedule: PRN - Must be available to work a minimum of 36 hours per six-week period, including at least one weekend day. Available shifts may include days, evenings, nights, and weekends, with many coverage needs occurring during evenings, nights, and weekends.

Available shifts may include:

• 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

• 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM

• 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

• 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
