Registered Nurse - Diabetic Educator, Ambulatory, Supplemental - RN

The Registered Nurse (RN) Diabetes Nurse Educator is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. Will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the Scope of Practice, Standards of Practice, and Standards of Professional Performance for Diabetes Educators provide a basis for the practice of the RN Diabetes Nurse Educator. Provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. Delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. Possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and participates on committees or projects.

Qualifications

Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Effective March 1, 2017, incumbents who do not have their BSN are required to complete their degree by December 31, 2022. If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required. 

• BSN required.
• One year RN experience within the last five years preferred.
• One year diabetes education experience strongly preferred.
• Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Certification (or required within two years of hire). 
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). 
• Experience working in a team environment. 
• Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. 
• Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends and on-call. 
• Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. 
• Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills. 
• Current RN license by applicable state requirements. 
• Arizona - Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency. 
• American Red Cross Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential required within two years of employment at ADA certified sites. 
• Certification preferred at non-ADA certified sites. 
• Listing of current recognized ADA certified programs: http://professional.diabetes.org/diabetes-education.
• Positions that are not on campus may not require current Basic Life Support (BLS) competency as determined by the work area.
• Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
