ABOUT THE ROLE

As Regional Director, Western States, you will lead MVP’s strategy, relationships, and grantmaking across 19 Western states, including Nevada, Texas, Alaska, Nebraska, and California. You will serve as MVP’s primary regional liaison with grassroots organizations, intermediaries, select national partners, and donors seeking to support movement building and progressive power across the West.

This is both a regional leadership and hands-on state strategy role. You will directly lead MVP’s strategy, relationships, and grantmaking across a large and politically diverse regional portfolio while managing and supporting MVP’s Arizona State Advisor. You will help ensure that our state strategies are ambitious, grounded in the expertise of local partners, connected where useful across state lines, and backed by the resources organizations need to build durable power.

You will report to the Director of State Programs and work closely with leaders on MVP’s capacity building, program operations, state advising and donor advising teams.

MVP’s state and regional staff are responsible for cultivating deep, trusting relationships with grassroots partners; developing a sophisticated understanding of political and movement ecosystems; and directing resources toward opportunities to build lasting progressive power and achieve meaningful policy and electoral change. The Regional Director, Western States will bring this approach to a broad and varied region while identifying opportunities for greater coordination, learning, and investment across state lines.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead MVP’s Western States strategy

Develop and implement an ambitious strategy for MVP’s work across 19 Western states, including Nevada, Texas, Alaska, Nebraska, and California.

• Build and maintain a strong understanding of the region’s political landscapes, movement infrastructure, funding ecosystems, challenges, and opportunities.

• Identify the states, organizations, infrastructure, and opportunities where MVP investment can have the greatest short- and long-term impact.

• Develop differentiated strategies appropriate to states with very different political conditions and levels of movement infrastructure.

• Identify opportunities for regional approaches, collaboration, and learning that strengthen organizing ecosystems and advance policy and electoral goals across state lines.

Manage and support the Arizona State Advisor

Manage MVP’s Arizona State Advisor and ensure the strength and effectiveness of MVP’s Arizona program.

• Provide regular coaching, strategic guidance, feedback, and professional development.

• Support the State Advisor in developing and executing ambitious short- and long-term strategy and navigating complex partner relationships, funding decisions, and political opportunities.

• Ensure Arizona grantmaking, partner engagement, donor coordination, reporting, and planning align with MVP’s organizational priorities and standards.

• Create opportunities for collaboration and shared learning between Arizona and the broader Western portfolio.

Build strong partner relationships and state ecosystems

Cultivate trusting relationships with grassroots organizations and help partners build the strategy, capacity, and infrastructure required to grow their power.

• Develop a strong understanding of states’ organizing ecosystems, political and policy landscapes, infrastructure gaps, and opportunities through regular engagement with partners and allies.

• Work with organizations to strengthen annual and multi-year electoral, issue advocacy, and base-building strategies—including helping emerging and growing organizations develop plans, expand their ambitions, and dream bigger.

• Identify infrastructure gaps and political opportunities and work with partners to strengthen existing organizations, nurture emerging groups and alliances, and build missing capacity.

• In partnership with MVP’s Capacity Building team, connect partners with resources and support to strengthen their organizations and strategic capacities.

Develop strategy and make investment recommendations

Translate knowledge of state and regional ecosystems into clear, actionable recommendations for MVP investment.

• Develop internal strategy documents and legally compliant external 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC state plans that make the case for where, when, how, and how much MVP should invest to build progressive power through grassroots organizing.

• Assess organizational strengths and needs, infrastructure gaps, political opportunities, and funding needs to inform grantmaking recommendations.

• Manage grantmaking budgets across the Western portfolio, tracking partner funding needs and adjusting recommendations as conditions evolve; work with the Arizona State Advisor to oversee Arizona strategy and grantmaking.

• Partner with MVP’s Grantmaking team to administer and track grants and maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant recommendations and records.

Align donors, funders, and intermediaries

Help move more resources toward strong state and regional strategies and greater alignment across the funding landscape.

• Build relationships with local and national funders, donor networks, intermediaries, and organizing networks relevant to MVP’s Western strategy.

• Advise funders and donors on state landscapes, organizational needs, and strategic investment opportunities in coordination with relevant MVP staff.

• Lead or oversee MVP’s engagement with relevant state-based 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), donor tables, and other alliances.

• Identify opportunities to align funding around shared strategic priorities and bring additional resources to strong state and regional strategies.

Document, communicate, and evaluate progress

Ensure MVP learns from its investments, communicates their impact, and adjusts strategy as conditions change.

• Work with partners to develop compelling, legally compliant program reports rooted in state plans and measurable progress toward goals.

• Assess progress, offer strategic feedback to partners, and recommend shifts when investments or approaches are not producing the intended results.

• Share lessons, effective practices, stories, and examples of impact across MVP and among partners.

• Help improve MVP’s planning, reporting, grantmaking, and evaluation systems to better support strong state strategy and legal compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Note: Well-qualified candidates may not necessarily meet every single point below. 

• Significant political campaign and/or movement organizing experience, with strong knowledge of state political and movement ecosystems.

• Senior-level organizational, campaign, coalition, or movement leadership experience, including experience managing and developing staff.

• Demonstrated ability to develop strategy, assess organizations and political opportunities, and translate analysis into clear priorities and investments.

• Experience building trusted relationships and working effectively across diverse organizations, movements, coalitions, and constituencies.

• Strong judgment, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to balance long-term strategy and fast-moving political opportunities.

• Passion for supporting grassroots organizations and building progressive power.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Deep knowledge of political, organizing, and funding landscapes in one or more Western states.

• Experience developing or managing strategy across multiple states or a large geographic region.

• Experience with grantmaking, philanthropy, fundraising, or advising funders and donors.

• Demonstrated success coaching organizational leaders and organizers.

• Familiarity with field and campaign tools such as VAN and workplace systems including Slack, Airtable, and Google Workspace.

• Familiarity with—or a strong desire to learn—the compliance frameworks governing 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC activity.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Full-time, remote, exempt position

• Occasional travel for MVP team gatherings (2-5 times per year).

• Frequent travel in states throughout the West
