Props Assistant - 2026 Summer Festival

Reports to: Props Supervisor
Work Schedule: Summer Schedule: Tuesday-Sunday during Festival Season (May-August)

POSITION SUMMARY
The Props Assistant will be working with the Props Supervisor and IATSE Stage Crew for several hours every day. This position will be tasked based on the needs/designs for the season’s productions and the individual skill level and prior experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

◆ Assist in the organization and inventory of the prop stock as required
◆ Ensure props are in good condition, and repair or replace damaged props as needed in conjunction with the IATSE Stage Crew.
◆ Set up and maintain the props table or storage area for easy access during rehearsals and performances with the stage management teams.
◆ Assist with keeping detailed inventory of all props, noting any items borrowed, rented, or used during production.
◆ Assist the Props Supervisor with building, sourcing, and modifying props to meet specific production requirements.
◆ Help in painting, distressing, or creating special effects on props as needed.
◆ Communicate with the Props Supervisor, Directors, Stage Managers, and Costume and Scenic Departments to ensure that props are integrated seamlessly into the production.
◆ Assist in the coordination of all stage weapon utilization along with the Props Supervisor and Fight Choreographer.
◆ Assist with the coordination of all rehearsal props and furniture with Stage Management.
◆ The person in this position moves across and around Central City’s mountain environment multiple times daily, including traversing steep hills, unpaved areas, and tight corners.
◆ This position is not part of the Performance Run Crew as this is not an IATSE position.

TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS
An ideal candidate will be an organized and detail-oriented individual who wants to excel in assisting with prop shopping and creation. They have a strong ability to follow instructions, work efficiently under pressure, and support the team in a fast-paced environment. With a basic understanding of research, sewing, carpentry, painting, and other properties creation techniques, the Props Assistant is adaptable and quick to assist with last-minute changes or adjustments. Strong communication skills, reliability, and a professional attitude are essential. A willingness to learn and be a friendly face are also key for success in this role.

QUALIFICATIONS:
◆ Previous experience in theater production, particularly in props, is highly desirable.
◆ A degree or coursework in theater arts, production design, or a related field is preferred but not always necessary.
◆ Experience in other areas of stage production (e.g., set design, costume design) or as a stagehand can be beneficial.
◆ Basic knowledge of tools and materials used in prop creation, such as paint, wood, fabric, and foam.
◆ Ability to use basic craft and construction tools (e.g., hot glue guns, hammers, drills).
◆ Knowledge of special effects for props, including aging, distressing, and simple mechanical functions, is an asset.
◆ Strong attention to detail to ensure props match the vision of the production and are used correctly.
◆ Strong organizational skills to manage inventory, prop storage, and schedules.
◆ Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently and independently.
◆ Ability to work collaboratively with the Props Supervisor, directors, designers, stage managers, and performers.
◆ Strong verbal communication skills to follow instructions and report on prop-related issues.
◆ Ability to take direction and adapt to changes quickly, especially during rehearsals.
◆ Ability to lift, carry, and move props of varying weights and sizes.
◆ Comfort with bending, crouching, and standing for extended periods of time
◆ Understanding of safety procedures when handling materials, tools, and props.
◆ Knowledge of fire safety and other safety protocols related to theatrical productions.

COMPENSATION
For this role, Central City Opera can provide a fee of $900.00 per week for nine (9) weeks. Dates of work are May 18 through August 9, 2026. Exact dates can be flexible for the right candidate.

In addition, CCOHA will provide rent-free housing accommodations and a prepaid, round-trip air coach ticket, or its cash-equivalent, for transportation from city of residence or engagement en route and return to city of residence.
