The Property General Claims Adjuster - Farm/Commercial reports to the Property Claims Supervisor, and the primary function of the role is to investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve complex, high-severity farm and commercial property insurance claims.

Location: The successful candidate will work in the field but must be located in one of the following states: WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, UT, or AZ; must be able to work during our core Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours; and must have high-speed internet (internet speed test required).

Hiring Range: $104,910 - $114,477*

Salary Range: $104,910 - $130,111

Responsibilities

• Independently investigate, evaluate, and resolve large and complex commercial property, casualty, and farm/ranch claims, including total losses, from first notice of loss through final settlement.
• Conduct thorough on-site inspections of commercial structures, farm buildings, equipment, livestock, and crops to determine cause of loss, scope of damage, and coverage application.
• Prepare and review detailed Xactimate estimates for structural and content losses, applying like-kind-and-quality standards, appropriate depreciation, and overhead & profit consistent with company guidelines.
• Interpret complex commercial and farm policy language, identify coverage issues and exclusions, and clearly communicate coverage decisions to policyholders and agents.
• Set and maintain accurate case reserves throughout the life of the claim, adjusting for new information, coverage developments, and rebuild progress.
• Manage total-loss and major-rebuild claims as an ongoing project — tracking payments made, rebuild status, outstanding decisions, and expected time to completion, with regular status reporting to the policyholder and to claims leadership.
• Coordinate with general contractors, engineers, public adjusters, attorneys, and third-party vendors (e.g., ITEL, HOVER/Eagleview, mitigation and demolition vendors) as needed to move a file to resolution.
• Recognize and escalate claims involving potential fraud, subrogation, or litigation exposure.
• Deploy to catastrophe (CAT) events as needed, including hail, wind, wildfire, and other large-scale losses, sometimes on short notice and outside your home territory.
• Serve as a technical resource and mentor for staff and field adjusters on large-loss handling, farm/commercial coverage questions, and estimating best practices.
• Maintain thorough, well-organized claim file documentation that would allow another adjuster to pick up the file and understand its status at a glance.
• May require after-hours duty/availability and overnight travel.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities:

• 5+ years of experience as a General Adjuster or senior claims adjuster handling large commercial property/casualty claims; farm or agribusiness claims experience strongly preferred.
• Active property & casualty adjuster license(s) in good standing, or ability to obtain licensure in required states within an agreed timeframe.
• Demonstrated experience handling total-loss and major-rebuild claims, including scope-of-loss estimating, contractor coordination, and reserve management.
• Proficiency with Xactimate (or comparable estimating software) and standard claims/documentation systems.
• Strong working knowledge of commercial property, general liability, and farm/ranch coverage forms, endorsements, and exclusions.
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record, with the ability to travel regularly within the assigned territory and deploy to CAT events as needed.
• Ability to safely access and inspect damaged structures, rooftops, and rural/farm properties, including uneven or hazardous terrain.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex coverage decisions clearly to policyholders under stressful circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications & Certifications:

• Associate in Claims (AIC) and/or Associate in General Insurance (AINS) designation.
• CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) designation.
• SCLA or SCGA (Society of Claim Law Associates / Society of General Adjusters) general adjuster certification.
• Xactimate Level 1–3 certification.
• HAAG certification(s) (residential/commercial roof, wind damage inspection) or equivalent structural damage assessment training.
• Prior experience working directly in or adjacent to production agriculture — row crops, livestock operations, dairies, orchards, or similar — is a strong plus.
• NFIP Flood Certification Number (FCN), if the role will include flood claim handling.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent business/industry experience.
• Advanced familiarity with structural construction/building practices and principles.
• 7-10+ years of insurance property field claims adjusting and litigation experience.
• Advanced estimating and scoping skills across commercial construction trades (roofing, framing, electrical, HVAC, plumbing) and farm-specific structures and equipment.
• Comfort with sketching/measurement tools (HOVER, Eagleview) and third-party evaluation services (ITEL) for material grading and pricing.
• Working understanding of overhead & profit, depreciation, and replacement cost/actual cash value calculations on large and complex claims.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, including video conferencing.
• Must be able to climb ladders to perform inspections of damaged structures.
• Must be able to negotiate steep stairs and roofs.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
• Ability to travel 50%-75% of the time.
