Job Summary
A summer internship should show you how the work actually comes together. MTech's Project Engineer Internship is a 13-week rotation for students who want to understand the full lifecycle of commercial mechanical construction - from engineering and design through field operations, project management, commissioning, and closeout.

You will work alongside engineers, Project Engineers, Project Managers, Field Managers, skilled craft professionals, and other teams across MTech. Rather than observing from the sidelines, you will contribute to active projects, visit jobsites, build technical knowledge, and see how office decisions become installed HVAC and plumbing systems.

The program is designed primarily for students entering their junior or senior year in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline. It also serves as an early pathway into MTech's full-time Project Engineer I Rotation Program following graduation.

Essential Job Function:
Project Operations and Coordination

• Support active project teams with submittals, current drawings, requests for information, change documentation, equipment tracking, and other project records.
• Assist Project Engineers, Project Managers, and Field Managers with material and equipment procurement, delivery coordination, and follow-up with vendors, subcontractors, and purchasing.
• Learn how project scope, schedule, budget, documentation, communication, and client commitments work together throughout construction.

Engineering and Design

• Work with MTech's engineering team to understand the design-build process and how mechanical systems are developed for different building types.
• Assist with heating and cooling load calculations, equipment sizing and selection, and introductory HVAC or plumbing-system design tasks appropriate to your experience.
• Review drawings and technical information to understand design intent, interdisciplinary coordination, constructability, and the connection between design and field installation.

Field Operations and Craft Exposure

• Spend time on active jobsites with field leadership to observe project planning, installation sequencing, safety expectations, quality standards, and day-to-day problem-solving.
• Shadow pipefitting, plumbing, and sheet metal teams to learn the purpose, installation methods, and coordination needs of each trade.
• Build relationships with the skilled professionals who install the systems and learn how thoughtful engineering and project decisions support successful field execution.

Commissioning and Project Closeout

• Assist with start-up, commissioning, punch-list, and closeout activities as project schedules allow.
• Help coordinate operations and maintenance manuals, start-up information, warranty documentation, as-built drawings, and other turnover requirements.
• Follow selected project activities from early coordination through completion to understand what successful delivery looks like for MTech and its clients.
• Regular and predictable attendance is expected in order to meet the requirements of this position
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Students entering their junior or senior year are preferred.
• Interest in commercial construction, building systems, mechanical design, field operations, or project management.
• A curious, proactive approach to learning and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions, take initiative, and follow through on commitments.
• Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and general computer applications.
• Ability and willingness to work in both professional office and active construction-site environments and to follow all safety requirements.
• Coursework or prior exposure to HVAC, plumbing, construction documents, Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Procore, or other construction technology is helpful but not required.

What success looks like:
By the end of the summer, a successful intern will understand how MTech's engineering, project, and field teams collaborate to deliver commercial mechanical projects. You will have completed meaningful assignments, built relationships across the company, strengthened your technical and professional skills, and gained a clearer view of the career paths available within mechanical construction.

Strong performance may lead to consideration for future internships or a full-time Project Engineer I opportunity after graduation. Participation in the internship does not guarantee future employment.

This position takes place in a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 20% of the time. The work environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are reasonable. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available and used daily, such as computers, printers, etc.
