Job Description

Program Manager, Teaching Academy

Position Title: Program Manager, Teaching Academy
Reports To: Managing Director of Program Design and Delivery
Department: Program Design and Delivery
Location: Remote within eligible U.S. states listed below
Salary Range: $70,000 to $95,000

About The Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators who reflect the cultural backgrounds and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve.

Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black students and other historically disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education.

About Teaching Academy

Teaching Academy is the first phase of CBED’s multi-year developmental pipeline for future educators. The program is designed to attract, cultivate, and support high school students in becoming future educators who are dedicated to intellectual development, committed to social change, civically aware, and conscious of their role as servant leaders.

Through curriculum, professional development, coaching, and partnership support, Teaching Academy helps schools and districts build robust educator pathways within their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students engage in intellectually rigorous learning, personal and professional development, and early experiences in education that prepare them to successfully transition into post-secondary teacher preparation, CBED’s Future Teachers of Excellence Fellowship, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy, and ultimately careers in education.

As part of CBED’s broader vision to build a strong Black teacher pipeline from high school to the classroom, Teaching Academy seeks to expand high-quality CTE programming to 40 Black student-serving public schools by 2030.

About the Position

Reporting to the Managing Director of Program Design and Delivery, the Program Manager of Teaching Academy is responsible for the day-to-day execution and implementation of Teaching Academy across a portfolio of school and district partners.

The Program Manager ensures that established Teaching Academy programming is implemented consistently and with fidelity to CBED’s program model, mission, and Black liberatory approach to educator development. The Program Manager works closely with Teaching Academy facilitators and school partners to support curriculum implementation, provide coaching and technical assistance, monitor apprentice engagement and program progress, and ensure key program milestones and deliverables are completed.

The Program Manager also serves as an important connector between on-the-ground implementation and organizational leadership by identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities across sites and communicating those insights to inform ongoing program improvement.

Responsibilities

Program Implementation & Coordination

  • Manage the day-to-day implementation of Teaching Academy across an assigned portfolio of school and district partners, ensuring programming is executed in alignment with established program expectations, timelines, and outcomes.
  • Internalize Teaching Academy curricula, program materials, and implementation expectations in order to provide effective support to facilitators and partners.
  • Execute annual program plans, calendars, milestones, and deliverables established by program leadership.
  • Track site implementation and ensure facilitators and partners remain on pace with curriculum, program milestones, and required deliverables.
  • Monitor the quality, health, and fidelity of Teaching Academy programming through program data, observations, facilitator feedback, apprentice experiences, and partner engagement.
  • Identify implementation gaps, obstacles, and emerging challenges and proactively surface them to program leadership.
  • Implement solutions and program adjustments in partnership with the Managing Director and relevant cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, trackers, implementation tools, and other systems necessary for effective program management.
  • Collect and organize qualitative and quantitative program data to support progress monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

Facilitator Coaching & Support

  • Manage and support an assigned portfolio of Teaching Academy facilitators, serving as their primary point of contact for curriculum and program implementation.
  • Build strong, supportive, and accountable relationships with Teaching Academy facilitators.
  • Facilitate Summer Training, implementation sessions, and ongoing professional learning experiences using established content and program priorities.
  • Prepare for and lead virtual coaching and professional learning sessions with Teaching Academy facilitators.
  • Conduct regular site visits, observations, and coaching sessions to assess implementation, provide actionable instructional feedback, and strengthen facilitator practice.
  • Provide responsive, on-call curriculum and implementation support to facilitators throughout the year.
  • Monitor facilitator progress through Teaching Academy curriculum and follow up when implementation is off track.
  • Differentiate coaching and support based on facilitator and site needs, in alignment with established program expectations.
  • Identify recurring facilitator needs and implementation trends and communicate them to program leadership to inform future training and program improvements.

Apprentice Engagement & Educator Pipeline Development

  • Ensure Teaching Academy provides high school apprentices with an intellectually rigorous, affirming, and developmentally appropriate experience that builds the skills, mindsets, and behaviors of high-quality educators.
  • Ensure program experiences support apprentices in developing educator identity, Black liberatory mindsets, servant leadership, civic awareness, and readiness for post-secondary education and careers.
  • Engage and support Teaching Academy apprentices in transitioning into additional CBED programs (as available), including Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) and the Future Teachers of Excellence Fellowship (FTEF), to sustain their development and progression through CBED’s Teaching Pathways toward careers in education.

School, District & Partner Support

  • Serve as a primary day-to-day point of contact for assigned Teaching Academy school and district partners.
  • Build and maintain positive, responsive relationships with school-based and district-based partners responsible for Teaching Academy implementation.
  • Prepare for and facilitate regular partner check-ins to review implementation progress, upcoming milestones, challenges, and next steps.
  • Communicate program expectations, timelines, resources, and deliverables clearly and consistently to partners.
  • Follow up with partners to ensure completion of agreed-upon actions and program requirements.
  • Troubleshoot routine implementation challenges and elevate significant risks, concerns, or partnership issues to program leadership.
  • Support the onboarding and implementation launch of new Teaching Academy sites using established processes, resources, and tools.
  • Represent Teaching Academy in partner meetings, events, and other external spaces as needed.

Program Operations & Continuous Improvement

  • Execute established systems and processes that support consistent Teaching Academy implementation across sites.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date program records, trackers, calendars, facilitator information, apprentice information, and partner documentation.
  • Monitor program data and implementation trends and flag areas that require additional support or attention.
  • Gather feedback from facilitators, apprentices, and partners to identify opportunities to strengthen program execution.
  • Provide program leadership with regular updates on site progress, successes, risks, and implementation challenges.
  • Recommend improvements to tools, processes, resources, and implementation practices based on lessons learned from the field.
  • Collaborate closely with Curriculum Design, Program Operations, Data & Evaluation, and other teams to execute program priorities and resolve implementation needs.
  • Support special projects and program initiatives related to Teaching Academy implementation and growth as assigned.

Background and Experience Expectations

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in education, educator development, youth development, program implementation, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting educational programming, school or district partnerships, or youth development initiatives strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, developing, or supporting educators or facilitators.
  • Strong understanding of secondary education and the developmental needs of high school students; experience with Career and Technical Education (CTE) or educator pathway programming is a plus.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple sites, timelines, deliverables, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate program documentation and data.
  • Ability to use qualitative and quantitative information to identify trends, monitor progress, and surface implementation needs.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, relationship-building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, exercise sound judgment, and know when to escalate challenges or concerns.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly (approximately 30%) to Teaching Academy sites and partner communities.
  • Deep commitment to educational and racial justice, the development of Black educators, and the Center’s mission, vision, and core values.
