Reach Incorporated, an award-winning out-of-school-time program in the District of Columbia, seeks enthusiastic Program Instructors to lead our After-School Tutoring Program. The Program Instructor (PI) plays a vital role in leading tutor training sessions on and supervising our teen tutors’ work with the elementary school students.

The goal of the PI role is to:

• Support our innovative work preparing teens to serve as elementary school literacy tutors and community role models
• Provide direct support to teens tutors, ensuring they are demonstrating professionalism, organization and ongoing support for elementary scholars

• Create a positive learning environment to ensure that the learning is both meaningful and fun

The PI must be an exceptional relationship-builder, able to connect deeply with participants to promote engagement in our program. On training days, the Program Instructor is a dynamic facilitator, who makes the curriculum interesting and relevant for our teen tutors. On tutoring days, the PI is a coach, able to support our teens as they become effective elementary school literacy tutors.

Pay ranges from $20 to $30 an hour. Instructors must be available weekdays from 3:30-5:30 PM. There is opportunity for weekend work as well.

PLEASE NOTE: We are only considering applicants with youth development/youth coaching/mentoring, teaching or high-school based teaching, tutoring or mentoring experience. Those without this experience need not apply.

Essential Functions - Support Tutors (25%)

• Model good instruction when leading tutor-training sessions.

• Coach tutors in providing effective literacy instruction.

• Build relationships with tutors.

• Assess tutor performance using Reach’s point system.

• Use available funds to plan at least two tutor outings during the year.

Supervise Tutoring Sessions (25%)

• Ensure that tutors are leading tutoring sessions.

• Build positive program culture at the elementary school.

• Address tutor/student behavior or learning challenges that hinder instruction and/or student progress.

Prepare for Program Sessions (20%)

• Prepare for all sessions by learning, understanding and delivering the curriculum.

• Prepare any materials needed for program sessions.

• Ensure all necessary supplies are available.

• Participate in staff training and individual meetings to improve practice.

Contribute to Program Improvement (20%)

• Track tutor attendance; monitor the tracking of student attendance.
• Regularly track elementary student performance using the tools provided by Reach staff.
• Support teen tutors by assisting them in writing goals and monitoring their progress towards those goals.

• Regularly submit attendance and other qualitative data on a weekly basis.

Parent Engagement (10%).

• Record all parent contacts in Reach database.
• Communicate with teen parents to report participant progress and with elementary parents to recruit and maintain elementary participants

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour

Schedule:

• After school
• Monday to Thursday or Friday
• 3:30-5:30 PM
