Professional Tutor: Math

Term of Employment: Part-time 20-26 hours per week. Possible renewal for future semesters.

Job Description: The Baker Center professional tutor:

• Provides tutorial services (both drop-in and online).
• Helps monitor tutorial activities in the Baker Center.
• Assists with training and mentors peer and para-professional tutors.
  • Makes recommendations for tutor certification.
• Provides services for students with disabilities.
• Demonstrates professionalism and develops training and other materials for the Baker Center.
• Engages in one-on-one tutoring sessions with assigned high-risk students, particularly students with disabilities.
  • Strives to learn more about these students' specific educational needs as related to their disabilities-seeking this training through reading, consultation with other professionals, conferences, and seminars.
  • Strives to identify and develop each learner's unique strengths and strives to help tutees become independent learners.

As needed, the professional tutor assumes a role in the provision of disability services within the Baker Center for Learning. This may include conducting accommodation memo discussions, preparing alternate format texts and testing materials, participating in all aspects of testing accommodation provision, helping students learn and work with adaptive technology, and more. The professional tutor is expected to learn all the processes associated with disability services provision and is relied upon to complete these tasks.

The professional tutor also assumes responsibility for the training of the peer tutors and the para-professional tutors-from developing training programs to facilitating the training to overseeing the follow through. Other duties include scheduling, planning of special projects, developing new systems, serving on committees within the College, creating Baker Center signs, hand-outs and other materials, searching for potential peer and para­professional tutors, promoting Baker Center services, and using/promoting special projects such as Strengths Quest.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum of 2 semesters tutoring or teaching experience
• Bachelor's degree with a focus on course work in an appropriate discipline. (Master's preferred)
• Substantive course work in a relevant discipline including, but not limited to, accounting, biology, chemistry, computer science, math, physics, or English/writing.
• Two professional and one personal recommendations
• Ability to tutor College Algebra through Calculus 1

Expected Hiring Salary Range: For Adjunct Faculty, rates are pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Tompkins Cortland Community College and the TC3 Adjunct Association. Current pay rate is $32.73 - $34.52/hour - Starting rate will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

NOTE:  This is a part-time (Adjunct) faculty position. Adjunct positions are ongoing-recruitment pooled positions. Your materials will be retained in our active files and be considered on an as-needed basis. Candidates must currently reside or be willing to relocate to New York State at time of employment. Additionally, maintaining New York State residency will be required for the duration of employment. Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
