Principal Learning Experience Designer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Learning Experience Designer based in the United States.

As a Principal Learning Experience Designer, you will shape the instructional vision for an adolescent literacy intervention program serving students in grades 3–12.
You will combine deep expertise in literacy, reading intervention, and learning experience design to create impactful teacher-led and student-facing experiences.
The role focuses on applying current science-of-reading research to help students reading below grade level develop comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, knowledge, and confidence.
You will work across print and digital environments, designing cohesive, differentiated, and evidence-based learning experiences.
As a senior instructional leader, you will influence product direction while mentoring other designers and establishing standards for instructional quality.
You will collaborate closely with product, research, assessment, design, engineering, accessibility, and editorial teams to solve complex learning challenges.

Accountabilities

• Partner with content and product leadership to define and develop evidence-based adolescent literacy instruction and contribute to the evolution of the intervention program.

• Apply current research in the science of reading, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, word recognition, morphology, knowledge building, motivation, and intervention to instructional and product decisions.

• Design cohesive teacher-led and adaptive student experiences incorporating explicit instruction, meaningful practice, differentiation, and responsive support.

• Ensure instructional approaches address the cognitive, academic, and social-emotional needs of diverse adolescent learners, including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students with varied reading profiles.

• Develop instructional models, lesson architectures, component specifications, design standards, and reusable structures that support consistent learning experiences.

• Write, edit, and revise lessons, instructional routines, student activities, teacher resources, and digital learning experiences for clarity, engagement, and instructional effectiveness.

• Lead the selection, development, and refinement of student-facing texts and multimedia resources that support knowledge building, reading engagement, and instructional coherence.

• Evaluate the alignment between texts, instruction, practice, assessment, and adaptive learning pathways.

• Review content produced by internal teams, contractors, vendors, and other contributors, providing clear and actionable feedback.

• Maintain high standards for instructional accuracy, consistency, accessibility, inclusivity, and overall quality.

• Use student and teacher feedback, research findings, product data, and efficacy evidence to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

• Support content models, metadata structures, authoring requirements, and reusable instructional frameworks for digital delivery.

• Serve as a senior subject-matter expert and instructional leader in adolescent literacy and reading intervention.

• Partner with Learning Experience, Product Management, Research, Design, Assessment, Engineering, and other senior leaders to establish and execute the instructional vision.

• Mentor and guide Learning Experience Designers, helping them consistently apply literacy research and sound instructional design principles.

• Lead instructional reviews, facilitate decisions, and help resolve complex content and learning-experience challenges.

• Establish exemplars, guidelines, models, and quality criteria that can be applied consistently across the program.

• Clearly communicate instructional decisions and the research supporting them to cross-functional partners and senior stakeholders.

• Balance instructional quality with product timelines, technical constraints, budgets, and project dependencies.

• Collaborate with researchers, educators, and customers to understand learner and teacher needs and validate proposed solutions.

• Contribute to an iterative product-development environment focused on evidence, continuous improvement, and measurable learner outcomes.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience developing adolescent literacy curriculum, reading intervention solutions, or related instructional products within publishing, education technology, curriculum development, or a comparable environment.

• Demonstrated experience designing cohesive teacher-led and student-facing learning experiences across both print and digital formats for students in grades 3–12.

• Deep knowledge of adolescent literacy development and the instructional needs of students reading below grade level.

• Strong understanding of current science-of-reading research and its application to older readers, including comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, word recognition, morphology, knowledge building, and motivation.

• Significant experience designing explicit, scaffolded instruction and intervention for diverse learners.

• Exceptional instructional writing and editing skills, with the ability to improve content for clarity, engagement, coherence, accessibility, and effectiveness.

• Experience leading complex instructional projects and mentoring or guiding curriculum developers or Learning Experience Designers.

• Ability to evaluate instructional quality and alignment across teacher materials, student content, assessment, and digital learning experiences.

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with product managers, designers, researchers, engineers, editors, and other cross-functional stakeholders.

• Ability to use research, customer insights, student performance data, and product usage data to inform instructional decisions.

• Familiarity with digital authoring tools, content-management systems, and iterative product-development processes.

• Strong communication, facilitation, decision-making, leadership, and stakeholder-management skills.

• Bachelor's degree in literacy, reading education, curriculum and instruction, instructional design, English language arts, special education, or a related field.

• Master's degree or advanced certification in reading, literacy, curriculum and instruction, special education, or a related field is preferred.

• Direct classroom or intervention experience with adolescent readers is an advantage.

• Reading specialist certification or comparable literacy credentials are a plus.

• Experience developing intensive or Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading intervention is preferred.

• Experience with adaptive learning systems, educational technology, accessibility requirements, and digital content development is beneficial.

• Familiarity with established adolescent literacy intervention programs is advantageous.

• Experience supporting efficacy studies, curriculum evaluations, or state and district instructional reviews is a plus.

Benefits

• Salary range of $90,000–$100,000, with compensation determined based on factors including skills, experience, education, and location.
