Police - Traffic Control - Officer (PT)

SUMMARY_____________________________________________________________________

As a Traffic Control Officer for the Town of Hope Mills, NC your primary responsibility is to provide protection for pedestrians crossing roadways enroute to and from school, and to assist bus and other school related traffic to enter and exit the school grounds in a safe and timely manner.   Traffic Control Officers are assigned to designated crossings at Cumberland County Schools located within the Town of Hope Mills, based upon traffic volume, physical terrain, the number and ages of children utilizing the crossing and the width of the intersection.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS___________________________________________________________

Qualified candidates should possess the ability to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Direct pedestrians across streets after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing
• Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people
• Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students and ensure their understanding for optimal safety
• Collaborate with officials to develop traffic patterns that are conducive to safety, efficiency and convenience
• Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags and hand signals
• Identify drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number
• Vigilantly watch for impending dangers to develop effective solutions before an accident occurs
• Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street 
• Performs other related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS________________________________________________________________

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

Entry Level

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Solid understanding of local traffic laws and regulations

Preferred

Completion of Entry Level qualifications AND

• 1+ years’ experience as a current traffic control officer
• Familiarity with directing traffic using tools such as lanterns and hand signals

Other Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

• Must possess and maintain a valid, current North Carolina driver's license.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT_____________________________________________________

Pre-Employment Screening:

Employment with the Town of Hope Mills is at-will and is conditional meaning it may be contingent upon the completion of pre-employment screenings, to include a drug test, criminal history, motor vehicle record, verification of education and/or employment and professional references. Positions with direct interaction with minors will be required to provide a negative TB test and complete a fingerprint background check prior to any unsupervised contact with minors.

Overtime Compensation Agreement:

Consistent with the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, it is the town’s policy to compensate non-exempt employees for overtime work with compensatory time off or overtime pay. As part of the acceptance of any offer of employment with the Town, employees in non-exempt positions agree to accept, at the discretion of the town, either compensatory time off or overtime pay, as appropriate compensation for overtime work that may be required to perform as an employee of the Town of Hope Mills.
