Pharmacy Supervisor - Iowa Methodist Hospital - Full Time

Overview

This position is responsible for the supervision of the pharmacy staff and coordinates the day-to-day operational aspects of pharmacy operations. The Pharmacy Supervisor ensures any operational issues are identified, tracked, reported on, resolved and/or escalated in a timely manner. This position is responsible for solving practical and strategic problems, resolving conflict and constructively leading change. This position is also responsible for the supervision and management of staff. The Pharmacy Supervisor accepts responsibility of Pharmacist-In-Charge for the pharmacy when applicable. This position will report to a Manager or Director depending on the organization structure. Assisting in maintaining compliance with regulatory bodies governing pharmacy practice.

Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY: 

• Coordinates and participates in the development and maintenance of up-to-date policies, procedures, and training materials for the processes used in the preparation and dispensing of both sterile products and other drug products 
• Coordinates and participates in the training of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students and other technical and supportive staff 
• Performs the human resources functions of hiring, discipline, evaluations, staff development, and promotion at the supervisory level 
• Reviews work processes and participates in efforts to improve quality of service and reduce costs 
• Assists with activities related to compliance with Iowa Board of Pharmacy, FDA, DEA and other accrediting/regulatory agencies. 
• Assists the inventory analyst in managing inventory, formulary and drug shortages. 
• Involved with maintenance of medication files in the electronic medical record in addition to participating in order set development and changes impacting clinical functionality
• Familiar with the automated dispensing system, unit dose packagers and barcoding systems in how they correlate and interface with the electronic medical record

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Practices pharmaceutical care activities:
  • Reviews medication orders to assess the appropriateness of drug selection for the patient 
  • Based on patient specific parameters (e.g. renal and hepatic function, co-morbidities, patient-specific medication compliance issues, etc), evaluates medication regimens for appropriate dosing, schedule, route, contraindications, and potential drug interactions 
  • Contacts the prescriber as necessary for clarification or to recommend appropriate therapy or dosage changes
• Dosing of medications using the principles of pharmacokinetics  
• Management of parenteral nutrition 
• Review of chemotherapy regimens 
• Assessment of select IV medications to determine if oral administration is appropriate 
• Provide drug and disease education in areas including diabetes management, anticoagulation, and self-administration of injections 
• Actively supports and participates in medication reconciliation 
• Evaluation and interpretation of culture and susceptibility reports for antimicrobial recommendations 
• Participation as a member of the health care team in patient care rounds 
• Evaluation of complex questions regarding medication regimens and adverse drug reactions 
• Assessment of medication treatment guidelines, protocols, medication formularies and dosing guidelines, identifying areas for improvement in these areas 
• Maintenance of the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selections 
• Supports the expansion of  patient care services  
• Documents pharmacist interventions in the electronic health record  
• Accountable for quality improvement measures and patient safety initiatives, particularly as they relate to medications and medication use evaluation (MUE) activities  
• Supports the ongoing development of pharmacy staff to increase knowledge and skills  
• Participates in appropriate committees, including Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittees, Quality Improvement Committees, and other work groups  
• Demonstrates a commitment to the improvement of patient care, customer satisfaction, and team member performance  
• Participates in the experiential education of pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and students of other health care professions  
• As assigned, serves as a pharmacy liaison to a patient care area, providing drug information and solving patient care and pharmacy issues

Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy with equivalent clinical hospital experience required
• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) preferred
• Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency or equivalent experience required
• PGY-2 or equivalent experience preferred for specialty areas

Experience:

• Proficiency in navigating the electronic medical record
• One or more years of hospital pharmacy experience required

License(s)/Certification(s):

• Iowa Pharmacist license in good standing or eligible for licensure
• Must attain a license to practice Pharmacy in Iowa within six months of employment
• Must be directly supervised by a licensed pharmacist until Iowa Pharmacist license is obtained
• Must maintain current license to practice pharmacy in Iowa and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners
• Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons
