Job Description
Patient Champion: PharmD Student Position
Grapefruit Health · Remote, U.S. · Part-time, Flexible · PharmD Students Only
ABOUT GRAPEFRUIT HEALTH
Grapefruit Health is a healthcare services company on a mission to solve the growing staffing shortage in healthcare by putting tomorrow's clinicians to work today. We train and manage clinical students to conduct remote, telephonic patient interactions using our purpose-built software. The result: patients receive timely support, healthcare organizations extend their capacity, and you gain real clinical experience before you graduate.
As a PharmD student, you'll have the opportunity to apply the communication, patient-centered care, and medication knowledge you're developing in the classroom while gaining real-world experience connecting with patients.
THE ROLE
As a GFH Patient Champion, you'll conduct structured phone-based interactions with patients on behalf of our partner healthcare organizations. Using our software, you'll follow evidence-informed protocols to check in on patients, complete assessments, and escalate concerns when needed, all from a quiet space of your choosing. You'll work with patients experiencing different disease states, preventative care needs, medication use, post-discharge follow-up needs, etc. All interactions are telephonic; no video, no in-person contact required. Must be based in the U.S.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
-
Complete a minimum of 6 hours of patient outreach per week on a schedule you build around your PharmD coursework
-
Conduct structured telephonic assessments and wellness check-ins using The Grove (Grapefruit Health’s platform)
-
Document interaction outcomes accurately within the platform
-
Escalate patient safety concerns to a licensed clinical supervisor in real time
-
Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality at all times
-
Participate in onboarding training and ongoing check-ins
HOW YOU’RE PAID
Patient Champions are compensated per patient call attempt and per successfully completed call assessment. Compensation ranges are designated per program which is determined after hire:
-
$0.50 per call attempt
-
$2.00 - $6.00 per successful call assessment. Range of pay is dependent on the program assigned after hire
Once hired, the initial confirmation email will detail your specific payment per your assigned program. Compensation is based on completed calls, and no hourly rate is guaranteed. We pay in this way so that Patient Champions are not held to specific volumes or targets they must hit per hour, and everyone can work at their own pace.
This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are responsible for all self-employment taxes as well as income tax.
TRAINING & SUPERVISION
All new student hires complete a ≦14 day onboarding covering our platform, communication frameworks, and HIPAA requirements. Once active, you'll be supervised by our Clinical Leadership Team who are available during your shifts for escalations and support.
This role is designed to complement, not replace, the education and experiential training you receive as a PharmD student.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
-
Income you can earn while you’re still in school
-
Verifiable healthcare experience for your resume before graduation
-
Confidence and fluency in patient communication
-
Familiarity with a real clinical software used in professional settings
-
The satisfaction of genuinely improving patient outcomes
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
-
U.S. based and active U.S. citizenship required
-
Must be actively enrolled in an accredited PharmD program at a university in the U.S.
-
Must have a compatible computer and cell phone with SMS
-
A quiet, private workspace free of background noise or distractions
-
Strong verbal communication skills, or a genuine desire to develop them
-
Comfort working independently in a remote environment
-
Reliable availability for a minimum of 6 hours per week

Grapefruit Health is an equal opportunity employer. Students work directly for Grapefruit Health––we are not a third-party recruiter. All patient data is handled in accordance with HIPAA.
Grapefruit Health is a tech-enabled care gap closure company serving health systems, payers, and provider groups across the country.
We mobilize trained clinical students — matched to patients by background and language — to handle high-volume, lower-acuity outreach like screenings, follow-ups, and care coordination. This frees your clinical staff to focus on what only they can do.
Our platform manages everything end-to-end: student recruitment and training, patient matching, outreach scheduling, and secure documentation — all within a HITRUST/SOC2 Type 2 certified environment.
The result: more care gaps closed, faster, at a fraction of the cost of traditional staffing — with outcomes your patients and your team will notice.
We work with organizations like Advocate Health, Atrium Health, Humana, Optum, Rush University Medical Center, and the VA.
