Seasonal Snow Plow Driver
Department: Smithfield Department of Public Works
Position Type: On Call • Seasonal (winter months)
About the Position:
The Town of Smithfield is seeking reliable and safety‑focused individuals to join our Public Works Department as Part-Time/On Call Seasonal Snow Plow Drivers. This position plays a vital role in keeping roadways safe and accessible during winter weather events. Candidates must be available during snowstorms, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be capable of operating town‑owned snow removal equipment in varying conditions.
Non CDL-$23.00/hr / CDL- $25.00/hr
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate snow plow trucks and other snow-removal equipment to clear roads, parking lots, and designated town areas.
- Apply sand, salt, or other snow/ice‑control materials as directed.
- Monitor equipment for proper functioning and perform basic maintenance (pre‑trip inspections, refueling, reporting issues).
- Follow established routes, safety procedures, and instructions from Public Works supervisors.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatch and Public Works leadership during operations.
- Work extended or irregular hours during active winter weather events.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High School diploma or GED.
• Valid Rhode Island CDL (Class B) preferred.
• Experience operating snow plow trucks or heavy equipment is strongly preferred.
• Ability to work in harsh weather conditions for extended periods.
• Reliable transportation to report to duty promptly when called.
• Strong understanding of roadway safety and equipment operation.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds above waist level.
• Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
• Ability to traverse uneven terrain and safely enter/exit vehicles.
• Ability to work in cold temperatures, snow, ice, and other demanding winter conditions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Working Conditions:
• Work in adverse and extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and high winds.
•On‑call schedule based on weather conditions; hours may vary significantly.
