Job Description

The clinical dietitian will work closely with the Director of the Weight Management Program to develop an evidence-based, comprehensive and multi-disciplinary Weight Management Program with the goals of improving health outcomes, quality indicators and patient experience.   The clinical dietitian will be comfortable providing one-on-one nutrition counseling and leading support groups.   Experience in weight management is not a requirement for this position as long as the clinical dietitian is willing and can learn evidence-based weight management.  Our approach to weight management is multi-disciplinary therefore the clinical dietitian should be able to collaborate effectively with obesity medicine specialists, bariatric surgeons, behavioral health providers, exercise trainers, endocrinologists, primary care physicians, RN Care Managers and other interdisciplinary team members.

Essential Job Functions:

• Obtain a complete nutrition history and nutrition-related physical examination.
• Formulate and implement a nutrition therapy plan based on the assessment of nutritional needs and medical condition.
• Demonstrates knowledge of nutrition therapy for common disease states such as hypertension, diabetes, and celiac disease.
• Adapt nutrition therapy and counseling to specific socioeconomic status and cultural needs of the patient to enhance compliance.
• Proficient with use of EHR including visit documentation, coding and billing relevant to scope of service.
• Communicate and document change in patient's condition to all appropriate providers.
• Assist in developing nutrition, physical activity and behavior curriculum for the weight management program support groups.
• Assist with data collection for tracking and analysis of outcomes for process improvement purposes.
• Contribute to patient recruitment and marketing efforts.
• Participate in community outreach efforts.
• Participate in Weight Management Program development team meetings. 

• Strong advocate of patients with obesity.
• Demonstrates excellent organizational and time management skills.

• Performs administrative tasks as needed, but not limited to:   Helping patients order products.   Discuss program option and support group services with patients.   Monitor and order meal replacement products for the clinic. 
• Additional job functions may include:
  • Assist in developing and implementing a screening program to identify patients at-risk for malnutrition, manage and provide appropriate enteral and parenteral nutrition recommendation, and create an individualized nutrition care plan for patients with malnutrition.
  • Diabetes counseling and education to patients and families including blood glucose monitoring, medication administration, nutrition plans; and foot, eye, review of glucose logs, and answering questions about glucose meter, CGM or insulin pumps.  Certified Diabetes Educator is preferred but not required.

• Participates in community as nutrition advocate and educator.
• Serves as a resource and consultant for physicians and nursing staff for special nutrition needs.
• Promotes team atmosphere among colleagues and staff. Works effectively with staff.
• Performs as a preceptor when and if necessary for new hires into the department.
• Acts as a patient advocate and upholds patient's rights. Refers ethical concerns to appropriate resources.
• Must be able to travel between patient care locations.

• Physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed into account.
• Physical agility, which includes ability to maneuver body while in place.
• Endurance (e.g. continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking).
• Balance is maintained during climbing, bending and/or reaching.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers.

Blood-borne Pathogens:

Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or related field
• Registered Dietitian with current CDR
• Licensed dietitian in NJ
• Master's degree in Nutrition preferred
• Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing required.
• Strong interpersonal and organization skills required.
• Strong ability to perform diverse work assignments and make decisions with minimal supervision under time limitations
• Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills required.
• Strong multi-tasking and priority setting skills required.
• Experience with Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, and Email/Voice Mail) required.
• Experience with Standard Office Technology in a Window based environment preferred.
• Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
