Part-Time Peer Mentor Supervisor - First-Year Experience Office

This position supports The Office of First-Year Experience (FYE) in the supervision of 15-25 peer mentors and two (2) - three (3) lead student coordinators each term/semester. The Peer Mentor Specialist meets one-on-one with each mentor every other week and is responsible for strategizing, planning and facilitating an ongoing, semester-long, and weekly training meetings for the mentors. This position also works with various campus entities, including General Education stakeholders, specifically UNIV 101 Foundations for Student Success peer mentors, to help support student success by representing FYE and its programs.

What you'll be doing in this position

Supervision and training of student employees:

• Meet individually with peer mentors for biweekly supervision
• Supervise the work of two - three assigned lead student coordinators
• Assist mentors to develop interventions to engage with and support first-year students
• Contribute to regular mentor trainings as assigned
• Plan and direct weekly professional development meetings for new and returning peer mentors
• Evaluate performance of peer mentors and direct remediation
Other duties as assigned; may include some or all of the following:
• Lead and administer projects to improve operations of peer mentoring training/development (online or in person)
• Assist full-time FYE staff with the recruitment and hiring of new student employees
• Participate in weekly staff meetings, mandatory new employee trainings, New Student Orientation, or other events supportive of peer mentor training/development
• Participate in other meetings associated with General Education stakeholders and events, including UNIV 101 programming and training impacting students and peer mentoring
• Serve as a liaison between FYE and campus stakeholders
• Innovate ways to create transformative experiences through operations and training
• Research student development theory and innovate new ideas to improve retention and academic success in a students’ first year at BYU
• Contribute to the vision and mission of FYE through additional opportunities for first year students and peer mentor development

What qualifies you for this role

Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred)
• 2-3 years of experience in education, counseling, advising, student affairs, human development, personnel management, or related field is preferred.

• Mature judgment and skill in supervising/mentoring student employees
• Ability to manage confidential information
• Ability to function as part of a team

Preferred

• Some supervisory experience
• Some understanding of student development and learning theory
• Prior experience working with college/university students
• Some teaching experience
• Understanding of university culture
• Experience managing/working in an office setting
• Experience in data analysis

Pay Grade: 49

Typical Starting Pay: $23.25-$30.00

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
