Job Description
The Part Time Nurse is a key health care provider responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, and appropriate medical record documentation for all students who are cared for at the Student Health Center during clinical work hours. This position covers work shifts on a part time basis for specific dates when additional coverage is required. Some weekend coverage is required.

Essential Functions:
- Provides nursing assessment, direct nursing care, and appropriate medical record documentation for all students who present to the Student Health Center during clinical work hours.
- Assists the physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner as needed during scheduled appointment hours and follows through on evaluation and treatment orders and medical record documentation.
- Provides nursing assessment and direct nursing care, assists students with meals, carries out evaluation and treatment orders, and completes appropriate medical record documentation for students cared for in the SHC Infirmary.
- Shares responsibility with other nurses and administrative staff in the Student Health Center for maintaining supplies, records, facilities, and other necessary functions to support the continued smooth operation of a 24/7 college health service.
- Observes color changes in patients’ skin, listens to heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope, assesses skin temperature, and palpates pulses. Uses near and far vision, perceptual speed, visual color discrimination, depth perception, and hearing sensitivity to safely and effectively perform patient care responsibilities.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, or other health care workers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: There are three shifts that may need coverage—day shift (7am-3pm), evening shift (3pm-11pm), and night shift (11pm-7am). Weekend coverage required. This position requires comfortability working alone after 5 PM to provide nursing assessment and care, with a medical and counseling provider on call, and ER backup for true emergencies. On weekdays, other staff members work until 5 PM. On the weekends, the nurse is the only staff member on site. Scheduled work shifts (up to 8 hours) for the Part Time Nurse as needed, specific dates/schedule to be determined by the department. Shorter work shifts may occasionally be scheduled to cover for nursing activities such as flu vaccine clinics, etc.
Pay Rate: The hourly rate for this position is $36.05
Minimum Qualifications:
- This position requires current R.N. licensure for nursing practice in Virginia, current CPR certification, pertinent clinical experience.
- Current R.N. licensure for nursing practice in Virginia and current CPR certification.
- One year of pertinent clinical nursing experience preferred.
- Knowledge of current healthcare practices and willingness to complete additional training as required.
- Professional demeanor, sound judgment, and excellent clinical skills.
- Consistent record of attendance and punctuality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with ill and/or distressed students, maintain confidentiality of personal health information, and work effectively as a professional member of a multidisciplinary health care team.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively with all members of the Lindley Health Center team.
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as needed.

Physical Requirements:
- Fine Motor Manipulation: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. 7: Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. 8: Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
Working Conditions: The worker is exposed to infectious diseases.
Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
