 A paraprofessional, or teacher’s assistant, assists teachers with instructional, administrative and classroom management tasks. Duties include: helping students complete their coursework, supervising students during group activities and preparing worksheets needed for class.

 SUMMARY DESCRIPTION 

Under supervision, works in a general education classroom assisting teaching staff in a variety of instructional activities. Assists teachers and provides targeted academic, behavioral or developmental support to students who need extra help beyond regular classroom instruction. Incumbent can also provide attendant services to students with various intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Incumbent performs related work as required. 

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

Paraprofessionals assist students and teachers to help ensure a smooth, productive school day. This often includes performing a mix of clerical, academic and behavior-management-related tasks.

Implement instructional plans provided by the supervising teacher
Create and oversee behavior-management plans
Supervise students in the classroom and during certain out-of-classroom activities
Tutor students and assist in small group learning exercises
Help with administrative tasks, such as copying and filing papers, taking attendance and preparing presentations
Collaborate with other educational professionals to meet students’ needs
Assist with more generalized school activities, like assemblies and recess
Participate in lesson planning meetings, parent-teacher conferences and special education assessments

Paraprofessionals may be assigned to a variety of individual students who require adult support based upon their IEP's (Individualized Education Program). Duties may include: realizes individual needs of students with intellectual, physical and/or behavioral disabilities; follows behavior plans as outlined in students’ IEP's; uses positive behavior management techniques; assists with lesson assignments; reinforces learning concepts to students; maintains discipline and order on the playground, lunchroom, library and classrooms; communicates with special education teachers about concerns and/or observations of students; assist in recording student progress towards goals and developing instructional materials and preparing graphs and charts; participates in district training programs when requested and receives training in and implements non-violent behavioral intervention procedures; maintains confidentiality regarding student information and records. Qualifications: EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: 

Any experience that would demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities. 

Knowledge of: Educational principles and techniques; student behavior and characteristics; basic discipline and positive behavior modification techniques; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics; current office methods and procedures including filing and records management; common office equipment and its usage; and some knowledge in communication and behavioral strategies. May need to possess various forms of communicating with the deaf through visual means (Signed English, SEE, MSE, PSE, ASI, or CUE); hearing disorders and their effects on learning and behavior; skills taught in the basic subjects included in elementary and secondary school curriculum; record keeping techniques; and computer skills. 

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of core subjects, like reading and math, as well as specialty subjects (e.g., art, Spanish, physical education), as requested
Ability to be patient with and empathetic toward children who learn and behave differently
Broad understanding of IEPs, 504 plans and other plans and accommodations designed for students with disabilities
Well organized and able to multitask
Willing and eager to collaborate with and take instruction from other educational professionals
Flexible and able to adapt to changing schedules, work environments and job responsibilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to spot and interpret nonverbal communication
Familiarity with basic technology (computers, copy machines, projectors, etc.)

Other Desired Skills:

Secure and maintain the confidence and cooperation of students;

Deal tactfully with students, parents and school personnel;

Use positive behavioral reinforcements;

Evaluate situations accurately and take effective action;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

Lift using appropriate techniques;

And, move students weighing as much as 50-80 pounds, daily and repetitively. 

Licenses/Certificates: To be discussed

A Paraprofessional must be at least 18 years of age; have at least a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma.

SALARY

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. 

Additional Job Information

This is a 19 hour/week, 185 day/year position. All Coral Academy employees are contracted annually with terms that are subject to change.

New employees are fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter.
