POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Camping, the OST Lead Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in both small and large group settings. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The incumbent will provide high quality educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The Sports & Recreation Director will serve as the direct supervisor during OST Sports Camp programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work with camp administration, other counselors, parents and campers to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all campers in accordance with the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Assist in implementing a daily schedule for your camp group.

Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature education, sports, songs, games, swimming, field trips, science experiments, etc.

Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.

Ensure that the camp facilities are kept clean, organized, and free of litter.

Communicate with parents about participants’ experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership.

Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.

Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.

Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.

These are not the only duties to be performed, some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
2. One (1) year experience working with children is required.
3. The incumbent must demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication.
4. Incumbent must have experience working with youth in a group setting and creating and implementing lesson plans.
5. Additionally, this person should possess the skills necessary to provide safe, appropriate and fun activities.
6. CPR and First Aid certification is preferred. Training opportunities are provided throughout the year.
7. Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
8. Chauffeur's license is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
2. Must have hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment.
3. The worker is subject to environmental conditions. 
4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
5. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
6. Must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
7. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
8. Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
9. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

10.Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an Emergency

POSITION FACTS

• Part-time
• Works with various camp programs on an as-needed basis, working between 8 and 40 hours in a given week depending on program needs.
• Camp days are offered in accordance with AAPS and YCS school year calendars.
• Position runs from September – May
