Summary

Orthopedic Technician Specialty is responsible for providing technical guidance to a group of technicians engaged in applying various medically or surgically prescribed treatments on an assigned shift in Trauma & Rehab service lines. Employees in the class serves as an instructor with responsibility for teaching practical and graduate nurses, nursing students, and newly hired orthopedic trainees in elementary and advanced orthopedic techniques, procedures and equipment. Primary emphasis is on technical assistance to technicians assigned to patient treatment in various locations, making rounds to insure equipment is in proper functioning order insuring the best possible coverage of hospital areas and personnel and applying or assisting technicians in complicated treatments.

Responsibilities

Inputs charges accurately into the system. Sets up for minor surgery - Stieman Pinning, compound fractures, wound debridement, etc. Makes rounds with orthopedic surgeons and assists with bedside procedures. Removes and/or applies plaster including opening windows. Maintains and sets up traction equipment including skeletal traction, Bulk's traction. Russell's, etc. Checks equipment for overhaul and insures that equipment and apparatus are cleaned at the completion of treatments. Identifies, sequesters and reports malfunctioning equipment to the Engineering Department. Ascertains availability and readiness of emergency equipment. Receives patient status reports from previous shift, indicating special situations in progress, critical or emergency cases pending assignments. Communicates patient care needs to appropriate nursing and ancillary staff. Reports supply and equipment needs to the supervisor. Keeps abreast of new literature and equipment. Prepares patient notes, charge vouchers and related records. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

High School diploma is required.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

Credentials

American Heart Association and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
