Position Summary:
We are seeking a full-time Ophthalmic Technician to join our private ophthalmology practice to support our ophthalmologists and clinical staff by providing comprehensive patient care, performing ophthalmic testing and diagnostic procedures, documenting clinical findings, and assisting physicians throughout the patient visit. The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with the physicians and clinical team to ensure accurate testing, efficient patient flow, and a high standard of patient care, while also putting patients at the forefront by educating them on their treatment, surgical procedures, and other services our practice offers.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, clinically confident, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced ophthalmology environment. This role requires travel across multiple clinical sites as needed.

Schedule: Clinic hours vary between 7:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, 8-hour shifts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
•    Obtain and document accurate patient medical histories, medications, allergies, ocular history, and relevant clinical information.
•    Perform comprehensive preliminary ophthalmic testing and accurately document results in the electronic medical record.
•    Obtain and document visual acuities, including distance and near vision as appropriate.
•    Perform applanation tonometry and other intraocular pressure measurements.
•    Perform extraocular motility testing and confrontation visual field testing.
•    Perform alternate cover testing and assess ocular alignment and binocular function.
•    Assess anterior chamber depth and identify findings requiring physician evaluation.
•    Perform diagnostic imaging and ancillary ophthalmic testing according to physician orders and established clinical protocols.
•    Operate and perform testing with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, including:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Fundus Photography
IOL Master / optical biometry
Corneal Topography
Humphrey Visual Field Analysis

•    Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures and explain testing procedures in a professional and reassuring manner.
•    Assist physicians with examinations and procedures as needed.
•    Maintain accurate, clear, and timely clinical documentation.
•    Follow established clinical protocols, infection-control procedures, HIPAA requirements, and patient-safety standards.
•    Maintain ophthalmic equipment and report equipment issues or malfunctions appropriately.
•    Assist with patient flow and contribute to an efficient and positive patient experience.
•    Perform other clinical and administrative duties within the scope of the position as assigned.
Qualifications:  

Qualifications/Skills:
•    Minimum 1–2 years of ophthalmic technician experience.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of basic ophthalmic examination techniques and diagnostic testing.
•    Ability to accurately perform visual acuities, tonometry, pupillary assessment, extraocular motility, confrontation visual fields, and alternate cover testing.
•    Experience with ophthalmic diagnostic imaging and ancillary testing.
•    Strong attention to detail and ability to obtain accurate clinical measurements.
•    Ability to work in a highly fast paced environment.
•    Ability to work effectively as part of a clinical team.
•    Strong organizational, time-management, communication, and listening skills.
•    Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable healthcare regulations.
•    Must be flexible with schedule and adaptable to travelling to other locations as needed.
 

Preferred Qualifications, but not required:
•    Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred.
•    Experience with OCT, fundus photography, IOL Master, corneal topography, and Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer.
•    Additional ophthalmic certifications or training are a plus.

Education:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent experience
