Summary: 

Vighter is recruiting Operating Room Registered Nurses (OR RNs) to provide exceptional patient care in the various operating rooms at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. The RN provides the full range of nursing services within the scope of practice for a variety of patient-centered specialties and ensures that all JCO standards for care are met during performance of patient care. RNs provide complex and comprehensive professional nursing services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of diagnoses for patients of all ages.

Principle Accountabilities:

• Provide complex and comprehensive nursing care for all surgical patients.
• Prepare the operating room and verify necessary supplies, equipment, and instruments.
• Perform preoperative assessments and verify patient identity, procedure, consent, allergies, and surgical site.
• Provide and maintain a safe, sterile environment during surgery.
• Serve as a scrub nurse when assigned, maintaining the sterile field and handling surgical instruments.
• Assist with patient positioning and prevent pressure injuries.
• Perform surgical counts of instruments, sponges, needles, and other supplies.
• Administer medications and treatments according to orders and facility policies.
• Monitor the patient's condition and respond to changes or emergencies.
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate intraoperative documentation.
• Assist with specimen collection, labeling, and proper handling.
• Participate in surgical safety/time-out procedures.
• Provide postoperative handoff and communicate patient information to the recovery team.
• Follow infection-control, sterile-technique, OSHA, and patient-safety standards. Operate and monitor specialized equipment including, but not limited to portable dialysis machines, oxygen, hypothermia units, and various types of suction apparatus, infusion equipment, and patient-controlled analgesia pumps (PCA), epidural pumps, sequential compression devices, hemodynamic catheters, monitors, and ventilators, cardio-respiratory monitors and vital sign monitors.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
• Maintain highest regard for patient dignity, observe precepts of the AHA's Patient’s Bill of Rights.
• Services shall be provided by established standards, principles and professional ethics, applicable professional specialty organizations and the high standard for which Vighter is recognized.
• All Health Care Providers will document care delivered and follow-up care required.
• Attends and participates in a variety of meetings and task force groups to improve quality and outcomes, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain a specific level of knowledge of new developments, new task efforts, and new policy requirements.
• Functional proficiency and ability to document patient-centered health care in the required electronic health record or electronic medical record, in the required format, in a timely manner, and in compliance with contract policy and guidance. 
• Occasional schedule flexibility with an end state of 100% staffing and 100% service to the patients.

• Knowledge of regulations (HIPAA/Privacy Act) regarding the confidentiality of patient medical records and information as well as Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
• Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Must have exceptional customer service skills.
• Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision
• Excellent organizational, scheduling and prioritization skills.

Education:

• Associates or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited university.

Qualifications:

• Experience: Minimum of 1 (one) year of experience as an RN in the last 2 (two) years working in the operating room..
• Must have and maintain certification in Basic Life Support AND Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through the American Heart Association (if assigned to any critical care specialty).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to patient-centered care and evidence-based medicine.
• Ability to work independently while being a collaborative team player.

Duty Hours / On-call Requirements 

• The expected duty hours for this position can be 8/10/12 hours rotating shifts. However, this key position supports 24/7/365 operations which may require work to be conducted in the day, at night, on weekends, and during holidays as determined by the facility.
• This position has availabilities to work day, evening and night shifts. Availability during weekends and holidays is a possibility. Advanced notice will be provided for scheduling purposes.

Travel:

• As required to satisfy the contractual obligations. Commuting is non-compensatory. All official travel is government funded.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to stand or sit for more than 8 hours per day.
• Must be willing to work overtime if necessary.

• Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.

• Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
• Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
• Must undergo Urine Drug Screening (UDS).
