Position: Newborn Advocate
Location: Layton (Home Base) - serves as the primary representative of the pediatric practice within affiliated hospitals and birthing centers
Type: Part-Time
Schedule: Days are negotiable. Typical hours are 9:00 AM-12:00 PM.
Position Summary
The Newborn Advocate (Hospital Liaison) serves as the primary representative of the pediatric practice within affiliated hospitals and birthing centers. This role builds relationships with new parents, provides education about pediatric services, and ensures newborns are scheduled for their first pediatric visit prior to discharge.
The Newborn Advocate focuses on patient acquisition, care continuity, and parent support. This role does not provide medical care, perform clinical assessments, or deliver medical advice.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Hospital Rounding & Relationship Building
- Conduct daily rounds in assigned hospitals or birthing centers.
- Introduce the pediatric practice to new families in a professional and supportive manner.
- Build relationships with hospital nursing staff, discharge planners, and OB teams.
- Represent the practice's values, services, and accessibility to families.
Newborn Capture & Scheduling
- Assist families in selecting a pediatric provider when appropriate.
- Schedule the newborn's first pediatric appointment prior to hospital discharge.
- Ensure registration and insurance information are initiated.
- Coordinate communication between hospital staff and clinic team as needed.
Parent Education & Advocacy
- Provide standardized information about newborn visits and what to expect.
- Reinforce safe sleep practices, feeding expectations, and follow-up timing using approved materials.
- Serve as a supportive, non-clinical resource for families.
- Escalate medical questions to nursing staff or providers promptly.
Care Transition Support
- Ensure timely transfer of hospital discharge documentation to the clinic.
- Notify clinic staff of high-risk newborns requiring expedited follow-up.
- Track newborns to confirm attendance at first visit.
Growth & Retention Strategy
- Monitor newborn capture metrics and report trends to leadership.
- Identify barriers to discharge scheduling and propose solutions.
- Support outreach efforts to improve hospital-to-clinic conversion rates.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate logs of hospital encounters and scheduled appointments.
- Track referral sources and conversion rates.
- Participate in performance review of newborn capture data.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required
- Experience in healthcare, patient navigation, maternal-child health, or business development preferred
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Professional presence in hospital environment
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently in a hospital setting
- Bilingual skills preferred in diverse communities
Work Environment
- Hospital maternity units and birthing centers
- Frequent interaction with newborn families and hospital staff
- Walking between patient rooms throughout shifts
- Occasional evening or weekend coverage depending on hospital census
