Museum Educator– Bilingual SP/ENG

The Morgan Library & Museum is accepting applications for the position of Museum Educator, 

Bilingual Spanish/English, to lead a variety of programs in Spanish and English across the Education and Public Programs Department. Teaching opportunities primarily focus on K–12 school programs onsite at the Morgan, and include occasional programs offsite at schools across the five boroughs of New York City, weekend family programs and large-scale multigenerational events, and programs geared toward teen, college, and adult audiences. Programs are inquiry and discussion-based and align to best practices in informal learning and engagement. Tours and workshops focus on the Morgan’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, with an emphasis on illuminated and literary manuscripts, drawings, local and world history, and architecture. 

The number of tours varies based upon school and group requests. During busy periods, an educator may lead two to three K-12 school programs per week during the school year onsite at the Morgan, and will also have an opportunity to lead weekend and evening programs for a range of youth and adult audiences. Educators are expected to provide weekday morning availability and lead a minimum of 24 programs per year.

Required training and onboarding for this position will include both onsite and virtual sessions.  Participation in ongoing trainings throughout the year on new exhibitions and teaching strategies will be expected with advance notice. All trainings will be paid. 

Responsibilities: 

• Regularly lead K–12 inquiry and discussion-based K–12 tours and workshops onsite at the Morgan in Spanish and English, as requested.
• Lead or assist with family programs, multigenerational events, teacher programs, adult programs, teen programs, and college programs on weekdays and weekends, in Spanish and English.
• Stay up to date on best practices in informal learning and museum teaching and incorporate strategies into tours at the Morgan.
• Prepare program supplies for tours and workshops.
• Attend paid trainings on new exhibition content, pedagogy, and teaching strategies throughout the year.
• Commit to supporting the Museum’s accessible and inclusive engagement goals. 
• Lead a minimum of 24 K–12 school, family, teen, college, and teacher programs per year.

Qualifications: 

• Fluency in the Spanish language is required. 
• Experience in a museum or informal learning environment and proficiency using inquiry- and discussion-based engagement techniques with a range of audiences.
• A comprehensive understanding of current museum education theory and best practices.
• Knowledge of accessible programming and universal design for learning is preferred.
• Familiarity with the New York City Department of Education learning standards and curricula.
• A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a four-year degree or a degree in education, museum studies, art history, history, or literature.
• Background in leading explorations of written material and emphasizing the relationship between text and image preferred.
• Experience leading art workshops, including drawing, painting, collage, and/or bookmaking. 
• Ability to be mobile in public spaces for several hours at a time, and the ability to set up and break down workshops and programs. 

Compensation: 

Teaching Rate: $ 110 an hour 

Training and planning rate: $30 an hour 

Part-time as needed; primarily Tuesday–Friday with some evening and weekend opportunities. Approximately 2–3 tours per week, depending on time of year.
