Job Description

About Kobo

Through our initiatives, Kobo advances equitable data solutions. We equip communities and organizations with the technology, training, insights, and services they need to turn field data into real-world change. Our primary platform, KoboToolbox, is used by over 35,000 nonprofit organizations worldwide to collect more than 25 million surveys per month, driving impactful, data-driven decisions to solve the world’s most complex problems.

Role Summary

The Multimedia Graphic Designer will play a critical role in advancing Kobo’s external communication and fundraising goals by creating compelling visual content that tells powerful stories, engages new and existing donors, and builds brand awareness. This position combines traditional graphic design with video production, photography, animation, and audio to produce engaging digital content for all of Kobo’s web, social media, and online learning channels. In this newly created position, the Multimedia Graphic Designer will bridge art and technology.  In this role, they will also identify and coordinate with external video and photography providers as needed, for example, for the creation of impactful donor-focused videos to showcase Kobo’s impact in supporting humanitarian organizations on the ground.

The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with a passion for mission-driven work, skilled at translating complex impact data and beneficiary stories into visually engaging assets that inspire giving. They are an expert in brand storytelling and stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

Graphic Design & Branding

  • Design and produce a wide range of fundraising and communications materials, including donor communications, social media imagery, brochures, impact infographics, digital banners, digital content for two websites, and dynamic presentation decks via PowerPoint or a similar tool.
  • Maintain and evolve organizational brand standards (including presentation templates and corporate stationery) to ensure consistency across all visual communications, while adapting designs for different donor audiences (e.g., high-net-worth individuals, foundations, corporate partners, or potential customers).
  • Create campaign-specific visuals that support major gift cultivation, individual giving programs, and online donor engagement.
  • Develop and manage a digital asset library (photos, videos, animation, graphics, templates) for efficient reuse across teams.
  • Manage the organization's brand architecture and create and maintain brand guidelines; collaborate with teams and stakeholders to build cohesive visuals aligned with the organization's goals.
  • Assist with donor-facing digital tools, such as campaign landing pages, e-newsletters, and virtual event materials.
  • Support a mobile-first website strategy with dynamic visual content and ensure accessibility standards.

Videography and Photography

  • Plan and produce professional videography and photography material for field programs, storytelling, and impact documentation. This includes personally capturing content as well as recruiting and supervising external partners on the ground. Edit and finalize all photo and video assets.
  • Produce compelling images and footage that authentically represent the organization’s work, with sensitivity to cultural contexts and privacy considerations (especially in humanitarian or global health contexts).
  • Edit and optimize photo/video content for various uses: websites, social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn), grant proposals, and stewardship materials.
  • Edit and assemble raw footage, incorporating sound effects and adding visual special effects.
  • Create engaging social media visuals, short-form videos, and motion graphics to drive donor acquisition, storytelling, and awareness campaigns.

Need to Have:

  • Proficiency in tools such as Figma (a primary tool we utilize),  Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom), or other relevant tools (e.g., Affinity, Canva, CapCut).
  • Experience in creating dynamic business or donor pitches using software such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, or others.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating multimedia and graphic design with a concentration of digital assets, photography, and videography work along with traditional graphic design elements.
  • Experience with social media content creation.
  • Experience with web design.
  • Knowledge of print production and digital optimization best practices.
  • Passion for Mission: Demonstrated commitment to the organization’s cause (e.g., humanitarian aid, global health, or development work).
  • Significant overlap in daily working availability with US East Coast business hours

Bonuses:

Advanced Technical Skills

  • Some working knowledge of 3D modeling and texturing tools like Blender, Cinema 4D, or Maya.
  • Experience utilizing AI tools responsibly to quickly scale variations of ad creatives and assets.

Strategic & Leadership Capabilities

  • Experience designing direct-response marketing materials and executing A/B testing.
  • Deep understanding of WCAG and ADA-compliant design standards for web and display experiences.
  • Experience leading freelance designers or reviewing the creative output.
  • Experience in an online working environment, including familiarity with coordination and productivity tools, such as Notion, Zulip, Loom, and Linear.

Verified Experience & Credentials

  • A specialized digital portfolio that showcases web graphics, custom motion graphics, videos, and animation, digital ads, and other marketing materials.
  • 2 to 5+ years of experience working for a creative agency or similar environment with a design and/or multimedia focus.

We know that people from underrepresented groups including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and others are less likely to apply for a role if they don't meet every qualification listed.
