MRI Technologist Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer

Overview

The MRI Technologist Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) will review patient’s implants to determine MRI conditional status and scanning parameters. The MRI Technologist MRSO performs diagnostic MRI exams (based on department needs) under the direction of a radiologist. The MRI Technologist MRSO provides compassionate direct patient care with an emphasis on maintaining organizational values and standards of behavior. The MRI Technologist MRSO operates MRI to produce diagnostic images of designated portions of the body utilizing various pulse sequences and surface coils. The MRI Technologist MRSO is required to participate in an on-call rotation outside of business hours based on department needs and must be able to work some weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Independently evaluates MRI safety risks associated with patients, staff, equipment, devices, implants, and procedures, utilizing advanced MRI safety knowledge to determine appropriate actions, restrictions, or recommendations.• Acts as the MRI safety subject matter expert and provides consultation to radiologists, providers, nursing, anesthesia, security, facilities, and other departments regarding MRI safety concerns, screening questions, implanted devices, and complex safety scenarios.• Reviews and interprets MRI safety information from manufacturers, implant/device labeling, peer-reviewed literature, and industry resources to determine MRI conditional requirements, scanning parameters, and safety recommendations.• Proactively reviews and researches implanted devices to determine MRI scanning parameters and unsafe potentials.• Consulting directly with the radiologists for scanning strategies.• Communicate modified protocols and sequences to safely scan implants.• Reducing calls to the radiologist by guiding staff through policies and workflows for scanning implants.• Assisting radiologist with risk vs benefit decisions to make sure we are doing what is safest for the patient.• Verify order with protocol and correlate with patient medical history. • Completes a variety of high quality, patient-centered MRI exams (based on department needs) on all age ranges (neonatal – elderly) and in varying locations throughout the hospital, in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.• Safe administration of IV contrast media.• Monitors patients for seizures, claustrophobia, or contrast reaction; ability to act appropriately including code situations.• Assists in the training and clinical instruction of students.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:• Graduate of an approved Radiologic Technology program required.

EXPERIENCE:• 2 years MRI experience in a hospital or clinic required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:• Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer upon hire or within 1 year required.

• Registered as a Radiologic Technologist with ARRT required.

• Registered as a MRI Technologist with ARRT required.

• IA Permit to Practice required.

• Current BCLS certification or obtained within 30 days of hire. 

• Mandatory Reporter within 90 days of hire.
