Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Details: Job Location: Hospital Authority of Candler County - Metter, GA, Salary Range: Undisclosed, JOB SUMMARY: 

Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this job description include but are not limited to:

Supporting the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.
Perform technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, microbiology and immunohematology.
Report test results following clinic protocols alerting providers and/or nurses about abnormal results.
Ensure quality control in collecting specimens, ensure appropriate sampling and maintain accurate record keeping.
Inspects and maintains instruments and equipment in proper working order.
Maintains a neat and clean work environment.
Working with other hospital staff members to provide quality patient care and maintain a positive, professional working environment.
Provides for patients’/significant others’ or legal representative rights and safety & notifications; strives to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal, regulatory, federal and state standards.
Provides a safe environment by monitoring blood exposure of staff and patients; keeping free from hazards for patients and personnel.
Initiate, interpret and enforce Laboratory Services procedures and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.
Maintains current competency by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
Functions as a contributing team member & communicates effectively with all levels of people.
Promotes positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community.
Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

May be exposed to patient elements, prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking, sitting, bending/twisting, kneeling/squatting, reaching, climbing and should be able to lift 25 or more pounds using proper lifting techniques. Rapidly changing and stressful environment. Ability to communicate with various levels of people. Possible exposure to communicable and infectious disease and hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple tasks and inquiries.

High school diploma or equivalent
Associate’s Degree or higher
MLT certification required, ASCP preferred
Medical laboratory experience preferred
Six to twelve months of job experience is preferred to acquire thorough knowledge of a variety of laboratory testing procedures, proper specimen handling, and to be able to perform more complex testing procedures.
Knowledge of hospital and health care practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to a Georgia Department of Human Services/Department of Community Health healthcare facility, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and DNV regulatory requirements
Ability to:
