Key Responsibilities

Do you have experience reviewing and analyzing medical records, and a passion for making a real impact in maternal health? This maternal mortality abstractor position with the Maternal and Infant Health Program at the Utah Department of Health and Human Services may be the ideal next step in your career. As part of the Maternal Mortality Review Committee, you’ll review medical records, autopsy reports, and interview summaries to piece together clear, complete case narratives. You will work closely with a supportive team of public health professionals to present case summaries, uncover prevention opportunities, draft public health reports, and support key grant initiatives that ultimately help save lives. 

Day-to-day responsibilities of this position:

• Gather and abstract medical chart information from hospital, prenatal, and clinic records, building clear case narratives to guide maternal mortality committee reviews.
• Collaborate across agencies and systems to collect full case histories, including but not limited to clinical practice notes, law enforcement records, and autopsy reports from the Office of the Medical Examiner.
• Accurately enter and maintain case details within the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) database.
• Summarize complex medical and social information into concise, objective, and de-identified narrative stories detailing the timeline of events leading to the death.
• Lead case discussions during maternal mortality committee meetings, serving as a trusted resource for committee members.
• Work with the perinatal mortality (PMR) team to turn case findings into actionable prevention recommendations, program reports, and grant deliverables.
• Attend bimonthly maternal mortality review committee meetings, monthly meetings with the funder, monthly PMR team meetings, and other meetings as necessary. 

Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

• Must be able to pass a criminal background check
• Detail-orientated with the ability to enter multiple data points accurately into database systems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience in reading, reviewing, and abstracting medical records, including understanding medical terminology
• Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data entry

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications: 

• Analytical Insight: Ability to review complex medical charts and quickly identify the most critical details.
• Storytelling & Communication: Ability to condense multi-page medical and social records into clean, easy-to-read, and objective case narratives.
• Privacy & Confidentiality: Knowledge of HIPAA, confidentiality laws, and state legislative authority  
• Collaborative Mindset: Strong interpersonal skills and a welcoming approach to collaborating with diverse clinical and community partners.
• Public Health Perspective: Understanding of the community factors, social determinants of health, and non-clinical drivers that influence maternal outcomes 
• Growth Mindset: An eagerness to learn and adapt to evolving clinical standards of care and public health best practices.

• Background in perinatal nursing, women’s healthcare or midwifery.
