Job Description:

Summary:

Open exclusively to AU students, the Marketing and Publications Assistant works closely with the American University Museum’s Marketing and Publications Specialist to support social media, marketing, and communications for the museum’s seasonal exhibitions and programs.

The primary focus of this position is social media marketing. The assistant will gather information and materials from artists, curators, and museum staff; identify the most compelling aspects of exhibitions and programs; and translate that information into engaging, accessible promotional content for museum audiences. Responsibilities include developing a strategic social media schedule, writing promotional copy, creating and sourcing visual content, photographing exhibitions and events, and scheduling posts in advance through Hootsuite.

The position may also assist with email marketing and developing promotional content for email campaigns.

This role is well suited to a creative, responsible, and self-directed student who can work effectively in an environment where priorities and assignments may evolve. The ideal candidate is comfortable taking initiative, making thoughtful decisions about content, and keeping the Marketing and Publications Specialist informed about the status of ongoing projects, questions, and deadlines.

Essential Functions:

• Gather information and materials from artists, curators, and museum staff.
• Identify the most compelling aspects of exhibitions and programs and translate that information into engaging, accessible promotional content for museum audiences.
• Develop a strategic social media schedule.
• Write promotional copy.
• Create and source visual content.
• Photograph exhibitions and events.
• Schedule posts in advance through Hootsuite.
• Assist with email marketing and developing promotional content for email campaigns.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

• Part-time.
• 10 - 15 hours per week.

Salary Range:

• $18.40 - $23.50 per hour.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Marketing, public relations, communications, art, and art history students are especially encouraged to apply.
• Excellent writing skills, with an ability to identify the most important and compelling information in longer written materials and transform it into concise, engaging promotional copy.
• Knowledge of social media marketing and an understanding of how content and messaging can be adapted for different audiences.
• Strong visual judgment and a good design aesthetic; proficiency in Canva required. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is desirable.
• Highly responsible, organized, and attentive to deadlines.
• Able to work independently and effectively in a flexible, sometimes unstructured environment.
• Strong communication skills, including a willingness to provide regular status updates, ask questions when needed, and flag potential problems before deadlines are affected.
• Comfortable communicating professionally with artists, curators, museum staff, and other collaborators.
• Photography and social media video experience is a plus.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

• Hybrid position, approximately 15 hours per week, with a combination of on-site work at the museum and remote work. Occasional weekend hours may be requested to photograph, film, or attend museum events.
• Museum marketing is deadline-driven and often involves managing several projects at once. The successful candidate must be dependable, organized, and proactive about communicating progress, questions, potential problems, and anticipated delays.
