COMPENSATION INFORMATION
The salary range(s) represents our good faith estimate for the role at this time. While we strive to provide competitive and transparent compensation, there may be circumstances where an offer is above or outside of the listed range. We are open to discussing salary expectations with qualified candidates considering factors such as the candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, experience and geographic location will all be considered during the hiring process.

• Market Monitor II Salary range: $77,900 – $99,325

• Sr. Market Monitor Salary range: $97,580 – $126,795

• Sr. Market Monitor II Salary range: $112,190 – $141,400

• Lead Market Monitor Salary range: $112,240 – $145,810

  Overview

  The Market Monitor is responsible for analyzing SPP’s energy and transmission services markets to support the detection, monitoring, and prevention of market power abuse and market manipulation. This role evaluates market rules, design, and performance to help ensure markets operate efficiently, effectively, and competitively. Working within the Market Monitoring Unit, the Market Monitor shares responsibility for fulfilling the unit’s market-monitoring obligations; developing metrics, analyses, reports, and responses to inquiries; identifying market trends and potential concerns; and initiating new or unique analyses based on business needs and the individual’s experience level.

  The position requires close collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and regular interaction with SPP internal departments, senior leadership as appropriate, regulatory staff, market participants, committees, working groups, and external stakeholders, while maintaining independence and objective judgment. Market Monitors also support real-time operations through a rotating on-call schedule. Expectations for autonomy, prioritization, technical complexity, and leadership increase across the Market Monitor II, Senior Market Monitor, Senior Market Monitor II, and Lead Market Monitor levels, with more senior roles taking progressively greater responsibility for managing individual and team efforts, leading complex work, and serving as a subject-matter resource with minimal supervision.

  Core Responsibilities

  • Level II:
  • Analyze and review market data, monitoring for indications of market power abuse, market manipulation, and gaming of the markets
  • Develop tools to analyze and review market data and operational decisions
  • Document and support investigations and studies in written reports
  • Coordinate and communicate with SPP, market participants, member companies, and regulators about market issues while maintaining independence
  • Design, develop, and implement new metrics
  • Provide technical support to leadership as needed
  • Actively seek out training and development activities
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Senior:
  • Analyze and review market data, monitoring for indications of market power abuse, market manipulation, and gaming through and leading the creation, development, and support of analysis and reports
  • Analyze and review market data and operational decisions for indications of market design concerns
  • Lead the analysis and review of market data and operational decisions for compliance with market rules
  • Lead investigations and ensure appropriate documentation
  • Lead the coordination and communication with SPP, market participants, member companies, and regulators about market issues while maintaining independence
  • Facilitate the design, development, and implementation new metrics and reports
  • Provide and coordinate technical expertise to leadership as needed
  • Represent the position of the MMU in discussions and MMU presentations at SPP committees and working groups while maintaining independence
  • Facilitate the development of comments representing the position of the MMU for revision requests and FERC filings
  • Promote training and development activities for other staff members
  • Independently initiate projects, analysis, new reports
  • Other duties as assigned

  Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in economics, math, computer science, information technology, engineering or other related field
  • Level II: 2 years of experience in the energy industry, data analysis, public policy or a related field; an advanced degree in a related field may be considered toward relevant years of experience.
  • Senior: 5 years of experience in the energy industry, data analysis, public policy or a related field; an advanced degree in a related field may be considered toward relevant years of experience.
  • Senior II: 8 years of experience in the energy industry, data analysis, public policy or a related field; an advanced degree in a related field may be considered toward relevant years of experience.
  • Lead: 10 years of experience in the energy industry, data analysis, public policy or a related field; an advanced degree in a related field may be considered toward relevant years of experience.

  Preferred Qualifications

  • Level II:
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: statistical analysis, utility operations, RTO operations, energy trading, or econometrics
  • Experience with data manipulation, data visualization tools, and analysis of large data sets
  • Knowledge of electric market concepts and ability to apply understanding in unique analysis
  • Basic understanding of microeconomics, including the theory of competitive markets
  • Sr:
  • Advanced degree in economics, math, data science, or other related field
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: statistical analysis, utility operations, RTO operations, IT automation, energy trading, or econometrics

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of workweek are Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. central time. Working extended hours may be required.

Travel Requirement:

This position requires minimal (10%) travel
