Position Overview

Zema Global is revolutionizing the way energy companies' access and use quantitative models to drive their businesses forward, from supporting the renewable transition to optimizing the traditional generation that enables it. Zema Global’s analytical offerings are built specifically for energy companies and span a broad array of industry verticals including energy trading, electricity production (thermal, renewable, and storage), retail energy, gas procurement and transportation, risk management, portfolio optimization, and others. 

Zema Global is seeking a Manager, Quantitative Development to lead a team of quantitative developers building and supporting the models delivered within our web-based software-as-a-service platform for advanced energy analytics. This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role. The successful candidate will remain an active quantitative developer, personally writing production code and building models while leading and developing a small team of quantitative developers. This is not a traditional people-management-only position.

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of quantitative developers, including hiring, onboarding, goal setting, regular feedback, and performance management.

• Own delivery for a portfolio of quantitative models: scope work, set priorities and timelines, manage dependencies, and hold the team accountable for quality and schedule.

• Personally develop new quantitative models and enhancements to existing models against detailed technical specifications, contributing production code as a working member of the team.

• Set and enforce technical standards for the team's codebase, including design patterns, code review, testing, performance, and documentation.

• Gather detailed technical and functional model requirements and translate them into actionable development plans for the team.

• Validate new and existing models, and lead the review of methodology, numerical accuracy, and results produced by the team.

• Serve as a senior technical quantitative subject matter expert across the organization, and act as the escalation point for complex modeling and implementation questions.

• Partner with product management, engineering, and client-facing teams to align the model roadmap with customer needs and platform capabilities.

• Assist Zema Global staff with the use and maintenance of quantitative models, and drive continuous improvement in tooling, automation, and development workflow.

What You'll Bring

• M.S. or Ph.D. degree in a quantitative discipline (mathematics, quantitative finance, statistics, operations research, computer science, engineering or a related field). Candidates with a B.S. degree and outstanding experience will also be considered.

• 6-8 years of professional experience building and delivering quantitative models in R or Python, with a demonstrated track record of production-quality work.

• Experience leading technical teams or projects - formal people management, or team lead / mentoring experience.

• Deep expertise in several of the following: time series analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, advanced regression and econometric techniques, advanced optimization techniques including linear and non-linear programming, stochastic programming, and dynamic programming, and machine learning.

• Experience with wholesale power markets, commodities markets, and/or energy system modeling.

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including version control, code review, testing, and performance optimization; familiarity with git, linux, docker, and/or kubernetes is preferred.

• Proficiency in communicating modeling methodology and explaining results with a focus on the “why”, both verbally and in writing, to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

• Ability to balance hands-on development with team leadership, and to prioritize effectively across competing demands.
