Manager of Finance – McGovern Medical School Finance Office

UTHealth Houston’s McGovern Medical School Finance Office is seeking a Manager of Finance to oversee financial operations supporting the Medical Services Research and Development Plan (MSRDP) and the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office. The manager will supervise assigned staff and play an important role in ensuring the accurate, timely, and effective management of financial activities across both areas.

Key responsibilities include reviewing and processing monthly hospital invoices associated with resident rotations, preparing MSRDP and GME financial reports and reconciliations, monitoring financial activity, and ensuring transactions are processed accurately and in accordance with university policies and applicable requirements.

The position will also:

• Prepare, review, and approve financial reports, reconciliations, journal entries, accounting records, and other analyses related to MSRDP and GME activities.
• Review and analyze MSRDP financial information, including professional fee revenue, charges, collections, accounts receivable, payer mix, and other key financial measures.
• Monitor GME funding, payroll, clearing accounts, project, and hospital billing activity.
• Reconcile financial information from multiple sources and investigate and resolve discrepancies or unusual activity.
• Collect, analyze, and report financial, accounting, and statistical information from various sources, including Epic and PeopleSoft.
• Support the annual budgeting process and assist with financial planning, projections, and ongoing budget monitoring.
• Coordinate with clinical departments, the GME Office, affiliated hospitals, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure financial activities are completed accurately and timely.
• Develop and maintain procedures that promote accurate, efficient, and consistent financial processes.
• Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
• Identify opportunities to improve business processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase operational efficiency.
• Provide leadership, training, guidance, and performance management for assigned staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on finance professional who is comfortable working with detailed financial information, reconciling data from multiple sources, identifying and resolving discrepancies, and communicating financial information to individuals with varying levels of financial expertise. Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet recurring monthly deadlines.

A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and five years of related financial or accounting experience are required.

This position is based in the University Center Tower and follows a hybrid work schedule. A greater on-site presence will be expected during the initial months of employment to support training, transition, and integration into the Finance Office. Greater flexibility may be available as the employee becomes established in the role.

Position Summary:

Manages the daily operations and functions of assigned finance or accounting units. Responsible for supervising staff assigned to the area and implementing strategic programs to ensure the improvement of the department's business processes in accordance with the university's mission and goals.

Position Key Accountabilities:

• Manages the daily operations of assigned accounting or finance units and associated complex accounting or financial assignments in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Develops, reviews, and evaluates unit activities and support systems and implements changes to improve and maintain the effectiveness of unit operations.
• Coordinates accounting work procedures and operations in the department to achieve efficiency.
• Creates, reviews, and approves various accounting records, reports, and applications.
• Provides accounting and financial support and services to various university departments and internal and external users.
• Assists in implementing short- and long-range strategies and financial plans that support departmental goals.
• Prepares statements, reports, projects, estimates, and/or projects as requested.
• Coordinates with administrators and other departments to process all applicable transactions in a timely manner.
• Develops procedures for collecting and reporting financial, accounting, and statistical data.
• Interprets and ensures assigned units are in compliance with federal, state, and local policies, including internal university policies and procedures.
• Identifies future needs and establishes requirements for the department.
• Manages Human Resources activities of the department in regard to recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required

Minimum Experience:

5 years of related experience in a financial or accounting area required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
