Position Title:  LSA - School Nurse Substitute

Position Location: Lutheran South Academy / LEAH Schools

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Head of School

Position Purpose: The School Nurse is responsible for assessing the health needs of students and staff.

Job Requirements:

• Administer first aid to staff and students. Medication and specialized medical treatments for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children in accordance with state laws and district policies.
• Assess situations involving students’ safety, abuse (e.g., physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
• Implement health care plans for students with health problems for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.
• Maintain contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention.
• Maintain students’ confidential files and records (e.g., health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, immunization records) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements of professional standards.
• Monitor students referred for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-up care.
• Refer students acquiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment and services.
• Respond to emergency medical situations (e.g., severe falls, seizures, prescription reactions, bleeding) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.
• Provide care to students with chronic illnesses and extremely high-risk students (e.g., allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures, medically fragile) for the purpose of assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
• Report health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse or substance abuse, contagious disease) for the purpose of maintaining students’ personal safety, a positive learning environment, and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
• Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Must be a Registered Nurse
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain detailed records.
• Able to define problems and implement appropriate solutions.
• Must maintain a high standard of ethics and honesty.
• Maintain accurate, competent, and efficient performance.
• Guard the confidentiality of personnel and records.
• Must be able to work with all levels of management, faculty, and staff along with outside services.
• Encourage a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm for the Christ-centered ministry of the school.
• Able to meet deadlines and give attention to details and accuracy when needed.
• Be punctual and reliable in attendance.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Regularly sit, talk, and hear.
• Regularly use close and distance vision.
• Able to work with young children without frequent illness.
• May stand or work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
• Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office/school environment.

• Substitute Position 
• Called to work when needed
• Will be reviewed annually by the Head of School
• Positive performance reviews are expected for continued employment
