Accepting Applications for Lifeguards with a October start date!Looking to fill the following shifts - Mornings, Mid-days, and weekends.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position ensures the safety of patrons in the aquatics area both in and around the pool. Those fulfilling the requirements and certifications for this position are expected to respond to emergencies throughout the facility.  

Level is dependent on employee meeting Level I, II, or III experience requirements.

Lifeguard, Level I duties include, but are not limited to:

• Pool Surveillance: Maintains constant surveillance of patrons. Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency. Adheres to and enforces rules in all pools. Rotates in a timely manner with other members of the guard staff. 
• Rescues and First Aid: Acts immediately and appropriately during emergencies up to the standards outlined by the American Red Cross. Provides emergency care when needed until Emergency Medical Services takes over. Provides first aid care to patrons who need it. Follows up any emergency care or first aid with a detailed incident report. Becomes familiar with the Department and Facility EAPs. 
• Cleaning Duties: Performs hourly checks of the locker rooms and pool decks to ensure that the facility’s lower level is clean and safe for public use. Performs daily cleaning tasks such as cleaning the stainless steel around the pool, power washing the pool deck, etc. Performs opening and closing duties.
• Training Duties: Attends monthly in-services that are run by the Headguards. Successfully completes monthly lifeguarding audits while in the stand.
• Customer Service: Helps patrons get fitted with life jackets as needed. Escorts external coaches to the storage closet to retrieve their equipment. Stays informed on departmental updates to better inform patrons. 
• Additional Tasks: Assists with departmental events and the yearly shutdown, as needed. Assists as needed under the instruction of the Aquatics Supervisor or Headguard as needed.

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum fifteen (15) years of age  and minimum three (3) months lifeguarding experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES

• American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguard - required upon date of hire
• American Red Cross Waterparks Lifeguard - Preferred, but not required

SUCCESS FRAMEWORK. The following list of knowledge, skills, and abilities have been identified by our team as building blocks towards efficiency and effectiveness in this position. 

• Knowledge of the department’s Emergency Action Plan
• Knowledge of principals of governmental organization and administration.
• Knowledge of the lifeguarding standards set by the American Red Cross.
• Proficient swimming ability.
• Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties; ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
• Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision. 
• Ability to operate a computer, and other office equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

WORK SCHEDULE. 

• This is a part-time position generally scheduled for up to 29 hours per week.
• Flexible hours may include a combination of weekdays, evenings and weekends depending on availability, programming and facility needs
• Holiday work or adjusted hours for special events may be requested

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS. The following equipment/tools are commonly associated with the efficiency of the employees’ job performance.

• Swimsuit, hip pack with breathing barrier, whistle, rescue tube, two-way radio. 
• Headguard I & II: Access to the guard office computer and chemical testing kit, personal protection equipment as needed.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES. The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of the job. 

• Work requires the ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend.
• Work requires the ability to drive and/or operate mechanical equipment.
• Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
• Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
• Work requires the ability to grasp, pull, push, climb, balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. 
• Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
• Manual/General labor of medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT. The following are possible atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. 

• May occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals or gasses, contagious diseases, airborne particles or pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
• May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, biohazards, or bloodborne pathogens.
• Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electric shock.
