About the Program: 

Theatre and Performance Studies is a recently-launched degree program in the Dance, Music, and Theatre Department. The major prepares students to create, interpret, and study performance for stage, screen, and beyond. Through coursework in production, acting, directing, and research, students engage with theatre and performance traditions from around the world, while developing the creative, analytical, and collaborative skills to create compelling live and digital performances, challenge perspectives, and build a professional presence for today’s creative industries. The curriculum fosters discovery of how performance shapes education, community, history, cultural traditions, and social movements--and how students’ own creative work can make an impact. Theatre and Performance Studies majors learn to use their voices both physically and metaphorically, to develop proficiency in storytelling and shared live presence, both in-person and virtual, and to cultivate and apply an understanding of how representation works and matters in performances on various twenty-first century stages and screens, and beyond.

About the Position: 

The Theatre and Performance Studies Program at CI invites qualified applicants to teach one or more courses :

THTR 181 Vocal Empowerment on Stage and Screen, a lower-division requirement for Theatre and Performance Studies majors and GE: Area A1 (Oral Communication) for majors and non-majors, introduces basics of on-camera work and vocal practices for effective and empowering performance and presentation.

THTR 380 Acting III Performance Styles, an upper-division requirement for Theatre and Performance Studies majors. This class focuses on advanced acting exercises and scene work featuring performance styles from a variety of periods and genres. May focus on one or several specialized acting styles from antiquity to the present.

This is a part-time faculty pool for available assignments during the academic year. Applications are considered throughout the year and reviewed based on Theatre and Performance Studies Program need, the courses listed above are those typically in need of staffing. People with expertise and ability within and beyond the current course list are encouraged to apply. Your application status will be updated throughout the review process. Minimum Degree Requirements:

An M.A. in Theatre, Performance Studies, Film & Television, Voice and Speech, or a closely related field from an accredited institution, OR a B.A. or B.A. in Theatre, Performance Studies, Film & Television, Voice and Speech, or a closely related field from an accredited institution AND significant related professional experience.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience in culturally-relevant, -responsive and -sustaining, anti-racist, pedagogies and/or artistic practices. 
• Availability to teach the days and times and in the modality (face-to-face or online synchronous and/or online asynchronous) indicated in the Schedule of Classes for the upcoming semester, or assigned for future semesters by the Chair of Dance, Music, and Theatre.
• Applicants should demonstrate the ability to effectively engage with a broad student population and provide mentorship that supports student academic success. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• M.F.A., Ph.D., or other terminal degree, or ABD in Theatre, Performance Studies, Film & Television, Voice and Speech, or a closely related field. 
• Significant professional experience in a relevant field.
• Experience teaching with Canvas.
• Experience in teaching performance practices and traditions of one or more minoritized cultures.
• Demonstrated culturally-relevant, -responsive and -sustaining pedagogy or artistic practices, through syllabi, curriculum, performance archive, and/or interactions with students, faculty, staff, and/or community members who span a diverse range of languages, nationalities, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, ages, identities, abilities and/or educational experiences.
• Recognized extensive participation in theatre or performance practices, creative activities, and/or scholarship. 

Responsibilities:

• Teach one or more of the Theatre and Performance Studies Course sections listed above, face-to-face, synchronous online, and/or asynchronous online as scheduled in a given semester. Final teaching assignment(s) and modalities, as well as additional opportunities to teach the same other THTR or PA prefix courses in future semesters, depend on qualifications, budget, enrollment, and program needs.
• Use subject-matter expertise to impart knowledge and critical thinking skills to students 
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in field of practice 
• Design syllabus and curriculum as assigned 
• Communicate expectations to students 
• Prepare and deliver course materials 
• Evaluate student learning and growth and assign grades 
• Design interactive and motivational activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning 
• Update course materials periodically, and regularly monitor course evaluations in order to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum 
• Respond to student needs and questions 
• Create an environment in which students of diverse backgrounds are motivated to succeed 
• Apply technology and leverage resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (e.g. use Canvas or make arrangements for guest
  speakers) 
• Handle mechanics of position according to deadlines. Understand how to use the computer, texts, A/V, grade submission, etc.

Compensation: 

California State University Lecturer Salary (Academic Year) Schedules (anticipated hiring ranges)

• Range 2: $5,507-$6,677
• Range 3: $6,221-$13,224
• Range 4: $6,825-$14,523
• Range 5: $8,593-$15,211

Placement into a range is based on qualifications and experience. Initial assignments are typically at the bottom third of the salary range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
