Lead Lifeguard-Part Time

This role ensures a safe, welcoming environment through active supervision, accident prevention, emergency response, and enforcement of facility regulations. The Lead Lifeguard also assists with staff training and certifications, equipment maintenance, and exceptional customer service while maintaining compliance with Wisconsin aquatic staffing requirements.

The part-time Lead Lifeguard will work up to 18 hours/ week a variety of hours throughout the week, including rotating Saturdays during pool hours. (5:15 am - 1:00 pm and 3:45 - 8:30 pm Monday thru Friday and 6:15 am - 5:30 pm Saturdays. The pay rate is $18.50/ hour. A shift differential of $1.00 per hour is paid for all shifts worked from 4:00 pm Friday through Sunday.

SUMMARY/PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Lead Lifeguard will assist with the implementation of programs, special events, swim lessons and supervision of staff for all aquatic related activities. The Lead Lifeguard will also monitor activities, observe and assist swimmers, prevent accidents, protect life and enforce regulations. The Lead Lifeguard will also ensure Lifeguards and Attendants are positioned in accordance with the State of Wisconsin approved aquatic staffing plan. The Lead Lifeguard will assist with staff training and ongoing professional development to support a well-trained, qualified, and effective aquatic staff. Position is also required to assist with general facility maintenance and perform other maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned.

1. Enforce Kroc rules consistently and courteously to maintain a safe environment for members, visitors, and employees. Monitor swimming and play areas, caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas or actions, and maintain order.
2. Assist the Aquatics Manager with the day-to-day operations of aquatics programs and facilities, including special events and swim lessons.
3. Assist with the development, training, and instruction of swim lessons (both private and group) as needed. Provide oversight to aquatic support staff, including Attendants, Instructors and Lifeguards, and assist swimming instructors with lessons and other aquatic programs.
4. Maintain constant observation of assigned areas, identify potential hazards, and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations. Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and provide appropriate CPR/AED/First Aid when necessary.
5. Assist the Aquatics Manager with administrative duties including preparing and reviewing information related to lessons, class registrations, incidents/accidents, volunteer needs, and calendar of events. Maintain program and operational records as needed.
6. Assist with facility operations, including updating aquatic bulletin boards, setting up and breaking down equipment, and inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining swimming pool areas, equipment, storage areas, and other assigned areas.
7.  Ensure aquatic equipment is properly maintained and inventoried on a regular basis. Maintain a safe working environment, report risk issues to the Aquatics Manager and Facility Manager, conduct water chemical testing as required by Standard Operating Procedures.
8. Provide excellent customer service to the community and ensure all customers, clients and members receive  prompt and courteous service.
9. Assist with the planning and delivery of monthly in-service training and lifeguard certification and re-certification courses. Support lifeguard recruitment, hiring, training, and retention efforts through staff certification and ongoing professional development. Monitor staff certifications to ensure required credentials remain current and staff are properly trained and qualified to perform their assigned duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• 2 years of continuous experience in lifeguarding and swim lesson instruction in a group environment.
• Experience working with adults, youth, and children.
• 1 year of staff supervision experience is preferred.

• Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Current certifications from the American Red Cross in the following areas:

• Lifeguard Including Deep Water/CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers upon hire
• Waterpark Certification upon hire
• Lifeguard Management within 90 days of hire
• Lifeguard Instructor within 90 days of hire (Lifeguard Instructor candidates must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED AND must be at least 17 years of age by the end of the course.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Strong verbal communication skills in English. Bilingual English / Spanish preferred.
• Strong personnel management skills, including the ability to delegate, motivate, and create a sense of team among the staff.

• Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. 
• Exercise good judgment in personal actions, personnel management, and professional matters.
• Knowledge of basic computer operations, Microsoft Office applications, email systems, internet navigation, and common workplace technology.
• Skill in remaining calm and focused under pressure, assessing situations quickly, communicating effectively, and coordinating an appropriate response during emergencies or high-stress situations.
• Ability to teach and demonstrate hands-on skills to individuals with varying levels of experience; observe performance, identify areas for improvement, and adapt instruction to support effective learning and skill development.
• Ability to work independently.

The primary duties of this job take place in a busy public Aquatics Center. The noise level will be high. Temperatures will be above normal room temperature in a high-humidity environment. This position will have exposure to chemicals and fumes typically found in a pool environment, as well as exposure to bodily fluids and other potentially infectious materials.

For other duties of this job, such as outdoor special events and community center activities, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment at these events is usually moderate to loud.

The schedule for the department requires employees to work weeknights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
