ELOS Environmental, LLC (ELOS) is seeking a Lead Archaeologist - Principal Investigator located around the Upper Midwest for a hybrid-remote position. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with Field Directors, Team Leads, and Project Managers to coordinate projects and ensure high-quality cultural resource management services.

As a Principal Investigator, you will play a crucial role in managing and overseeing cultural resource projects, serving as the primary author on technical reports, research designs, and other documentation. You will provide guidance and mentorship to staff, ensuring compliance with QA/QC standards and fostering a collaborative team environment. Additionally, you will manage budgets, proposals, client interactions, and staff, demonstrating proficiency in project management and effective delegation. The candidate will collaborate with other staff members on all aspects of cultural resources projects, including but not limited to: proposals; background research; fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III mitigation); preparing NEPA and NHPA technical reports; Due Diligence Reports; coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO), Native American Tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and multiple other federal, state, and local agencies; evaluating properties and sites for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), preparing determinations of NRHP eligibility, and completing state survey forms. As the Principal Investigator, field work will be on a as needed basis with the majority of work being in a remote work environment.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

Coordinate compliance with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, state regulations, and other laws relating to cultural resources.
Develop and foster client relationships to build business across ELOSs service offerings
Lead authorship of technical reports, research designs, and other documentation.
Conduct archival research and background records reviews.
Oversee and Assist with all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I-III) and monitoring.
Conduct analyses and prepare and edit technical reports for cultural resource projects.
Assist the field supervisor while on archaeological investigations.
Management of project budgets, additional staff members assigned to projects, and additional staff member duties.
Prepare and create technical, high-quality scientific reports, site forms, and research within a project’s scope with little supervisory oversight.
Direct the preparation of proposals, background research, technical reports, agency coordination, and other deliverables.
Management of cultural resources projects, including fieldwork, research, and report writing.

QualificationsEducation/Requirement:

Minimum of a master’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology plus 2 years of equivalent training and professionally supervised experience
Minimum of eight (8) years of archaeology fieldwork experience, with academic or research-oriented supervisory experience, administration or management considered.
Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards or BLM
Manual Series 8150 standards, and be explicitly approved/permitted by the respective State Office to be listed as a Principal Investigator.
Preferred ability to hold a BLM permit as a Principal Investigator in the northern Great Basin, Plateau, northwestern Great Plains cultural areas and/or in North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, or surrounding states.
Must have at least 4 months of experience in the geographic and/or culture area, preferably, the northern Great Basin, Plateau, and/or northwestern Great Plains cultural areas.
Strong background in Cultural Resource Management, including developing and implementing field crew guidelines to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Tribal coordination support is strongly preferred.
Preferred experience in multiple USFS regions and ability to be a permit holder in those regions.
Competence in theory and methods, and in recording, collecting, handling, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting cultural property data.
Demonstrated ability to plan, equip, staff, organize, and supervise cultural resource investigations of various levels.
Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, as evidenced by the timely completion of thesis, research reports, and similar documents.
Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) status or eligible for RPA status
Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA, is a bonus.
Experience recording archaeological sites on site forms required by various state agencies.
Excellent communication, editing, technical writing, and English grammar skills.
