Jazz Writing Program Adjunct Faculty Position
This position is dedicated exclusively to the Jazz Writing Program and differs significantly from a traditional MSJ adjunct faculty appointment. The successful candidate will possess a unique combination of teaching, technical, and studio management skills necessary to support the program's curriculum and recording facilities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Teach jazz composition and related subjects in both group and individual instructional settings for graduate students.
- Teach MSJ 522/622 – Introduction to MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
- Co-teach MSJ 775 – Jazz Writing Seminar.
- Direct the Jazz Recording Ensemble.
- Manage, maintain, and oversee the operation of two production/recording studios, ensuring that equipment, software, and facilities remain fully functional and up to date.
Required Knowledge and Technical Skills
Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in:
- MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
- Music notation software, including Dorico, Sibelius, and/or Finale
- Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), including Pro Tools and Logic Pro
- Virtual instruments and sample libraries
- Audio recording, mixing, and production techniques
- Studio design, operation, and maintenance
- macOS
- Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree (MM) or Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience teaching at the collegiate level.
- Professional experience in jazz composition, arranging, recording, and music production.
