Position Summary:

An Internist provides primary care medical services to the adult patients of the Health Center in accordance with the usual and customary appointment schedule. Will examine, diagnose and treat patients. Will perform physical examinations and order appropriate laboratory testing. Prescribe medication as needed and treat and follow patients’ courses of illness. Will treat wounds, lacerations and minor trauma. Will diagnose and treat internal medical problems. Will engage in preventative medicine techniques such as vaccinations, annual examinations and cancer screening. Will teach patients about the importance of healthy diets, liquor control, smoking cessation and primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease and strokes. Will provide personal and family counseling on personal and social illnesses such as alcohol and drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS. Collaborate with team members in the delivery and coordination of preventative and comprehensive primary care services.

• Obtains a comprehensive and problem focused health history
• Performs a comprehensive and problem focused physical exam
• Provides care that is respectful, culturally appropriate, and compassionate
• Orders and interprets screening and diagnostic tests
• Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making
• Communicate with patients regarding clinical findings

Medical Knowledge/Technical skills:

• Formulates plans based on scientific, evidence-based standards of care and practice guidelines
• Initiates appropriate and timely consultations (with NP, PA and physician colleagues, and others)
• Applies research studies pertinent to area of practice and applies theories to guide practice
• Recognizes environmental health problems affecting patients and their families.
• Recognizes and responds appropriately to medical emergencies

Practice Based Learning and Improvement:

• Monitors quality of own practice and participates in continuous quality improvement.
• Apply/conducts research studies pertinent to area of practice to improve outcomes
• Use evaluative information including peer review to improve care and practice.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

• Provides guidance and counseling regarding management of the health/illness condition.
• Communicates the patients’ health status in a cultural, linguistically and age-appropriate manner.
• Maintains confidentiality while communicating data, plans, and results in a manner that preserves dignity and privacy of patient.
• Communicates clearly and respectfully with department staff and  other internal and external stakeholders.
• Provides a complete and legal record of care.
• Communicates clearly and respectfully with department staff and other internal and external stake holders.

Professionalism:

• Collaborate with other health care professionals.
• Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legal regulations for NP/PA practice
• Uses sound judgment in assessing conflicting priorities and needs.
• Advocates for patients to ensure health needs are met.
• Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and the maintenance of professional competence and credentials.
• Reviews prescriptions with supervising physician as per state law and department policy.
• Assumes accountability for practice.
• Acts ethically to meet the needs of patients
• Reports medication errors and unusual and unforeseen clinical outcomes in a timely fashion to appropriate clinical leadership

Systems Based Practice:

• Considers access cost, efficacy and quality when making care decisions.
• Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
• Maintains current knowledge of the organization and of the relevant health center departments.

What You’ll Bring:

• Current Massachusetts MD license; board certified/eligible in Internal Medicine required.  Bilingual skills preferred.   
• 1-year relevant primary care experience preferably in a community health and/or ambulatory care setting.
• Experience with Epic EMR system a plus
