Intern: Automation & Process Improvement (Spring 2027)

What you will do

The internship program offers students an opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a real-world environment while gaining exposure to professionals in their field. Through meaningful involvement in innovative and impactful projects at Volvo Group, interns gain hands-on experience and contribute to business objectives. Working alongside full-time professionals, students develop practical skills, expand their industry knowledge, and create value for both themselves and Volvo Group.

Automation plays a key role in shaping the future of manufacturing at our plant.

One of the first examples of this transformation is the introduction of our Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) technology. These AMRs support material handling activities within fabrication by reducing non-value-added movements, improving material flow. This initiative represents an important step toward creating a smarter, safer, and more connected manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

As part of our automation journey, the successful candidate will:

• Identify and evaluate opportunities to automate manual and repetitive processes across manufacturing and engineering functions.
• Support budget tracking and reporting activities related to automation projects, including cost-benefit analyses and ROI assessments.
• Assist with tooling design improvements, 3D modeling, drawing updates, and engineering documentation using CAD software.
• Support the implementation of digital manufacturing solutions, including data collection, dashboards, and reporting tools.
• Participate in automation project planning, testing, validation, and deployment activities.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Maintenance, and IT teams to ensure successful project execution.
• Present project progress, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders.

Who are you?

Qualifications & Education Required/Preferred:

• Must be currently pursuing a degree in mechanical, industrial, weld engineering, or similar, with completion of 30 credit hours
• Must meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.75
• Must be enrolled full-time in school throughout the duration of the internship
• Basic understanding of Lean Manufacturing and process optimization principles
• Spring interns may work up to 30 hours per week

Skills & Abilities:

• Customer Focus
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Experience with CAD software

Travel Requirements: No Travel Required

For all intern and co-op positions, the hourly range is set at $17.00 - $46.00. The hourly rate for these roles is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, academic classification, and degree seeking area of study. In addition to these factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
