Instrument Technician I

Summary 

The Instrument Technician is responsible for installing, calibrating, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and testing instrumentation and control systems used in industrial facilities. This position ensures that instruments, analyzers, transmitters, control valves, and other process control equipment operate safely, accurately, and efficiently to support production and operational objectives. The Instrument Technician works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel to minimize downtime and maintain compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree or technical certification in Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Process Technology, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Instrument Technician in an industrial, manufacturing, petrochemical, refinery, power generation, or construction environment.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop drawings, electrical schematics, and technical manuals.
• Knowledge of industrial control systems, instrumentation, and process equipment.
• Valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurable driving status.
• Ability to pass all pre-employment screenings, site-specific requirements, and safety training.
• TWIC card and/or other site credentials may be required depending on project location.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

• Knowledge of process instrumentation, measurement principles, and control systems.
• Knowledge of pressure, temperature, level, flow, and analytical instruments.
• Knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and industrial automation systems.
• Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting techniques and safe work practices.
• Ability to calibrate, repair, and maintain control valves, transmitters, switches, and analyzers.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Skilled in the use of calibration equipment, multimeters, communicators, and diagnostic tools.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and respond effectively in emergency situations.
• Proficiency with computer-based maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to maintain a safe work environment and comply with all company and customer safety policies.

Essential Functions

• Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate industrial instrumentation and control devices.
• Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on instrumentation systems.
• Diagnose equipment failures and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
• Test and calibrate pressure, flow, level, temperature, and analytical instruments.
• Install and repair control valves, transmitters, switches, gauges, and associated equipment.
• Assist with commissioning, startup, shutdown, and turnaround activities.
• Read and interpret P&IDs, loop sheets, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
• Verify proper operation of PLC, DCS, and related control systems.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, calibration reports, and work orders.
• Ensure compliance with company, customer, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
• Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and safety audits.
• Coordinate with operations and maintenance personnel to schedule repairs and maintenance activities.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner.
• Respond to emergency maintenance situations as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach, climb, balance, push, and pull while performing pipefitting activities.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the scheduled shift.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and handle heavier piping materials, tools, or equipment using appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work from scaffolds, elevated work platforms, pipe racks, and other industrial work areas as required.
• Ability to perform repetitive movements associated with measuring, layout, fitting, bolting, tool use, and material handling.
• Ability to work on uneven, muddy, rocky, or otherwise variable walking and working surfaces.
• Ability to work outdoors in heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, and other weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:

• hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, and other project-specific PPE.

Work Environment 

• Work is primarily performed at active industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, and customer facilities.
• Work may be performed in refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, and other heavy industrial environments.
• Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, moving equipment, piping systems, and other conditions typical of industrial construction and maintenance.
• Work may be performed around operating process units, piping systems, elevated work areas, excavations, structures, mobile equipment, and ongoing construction or maintenance activities.
• Work may require the use of ladders, scaffolds, elevated work platforms, and fall-protection systems.
