In-House Registry Staff Nurse

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as an In-House Registry Staff Nurse in the CCD 6th Pre-Op Recovery Department at our Hyde Park campus.

The Staff Nurse provides individualized, goal-directed nursing care based on professional knowledge, clinical judgment, and established standards of practice. The nurse collaborates with physicians, anesthesia providers, and members of the interdisciplinary team to support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

Essential Job Functions

• Assess patients and develop individualized plans of care based on their clinical condition and procedural needs.
• Prepare patients for surgical and procedural services.
• Monitor patients during the postoperative recovery period, including airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and pain assessments.
• Administer medications and treatments safely according to physician orders and hospital policies.
• Identify changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly to the appropriate clinical team.
• Provide patient and family education regarding procedures, recovery expectations, medications, and discharge instructions.
• Document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses accurately in the medical record.
• Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Follow infection-prevention, patient-safety, and regulatory standards.
• Maintain required departmental and hospital competencies.
• Participate in staff meetings, education, and quality-improvement activities.
• Support a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Associate Degree in Nursing.
• Current Illinois Registered Nurse license.
• Current Basic Life Support certification.
• Ability to work the required day shift and every-other-weekend schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Previous preoperative, PACU, critical care, or perioperative nursing experience.
• Strong assessment, communication, organization, and critical-thinking skills.

• Experience working within an interdisciplinary patient-care team.

Position Details

• Shift: Days, 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
• Schedule Requirement: 36 hours per six-week scheduling period
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
