While the ideal candidate has equine veterinary experience, candidates with general veterinary experience and an equine background will be considered.

Position Summary

The Patient Care Professional provides advanced patient care and nursing support for hospitalized emergency, critical care, and specialty patients. This position assists veterinarians with admissions, diagnostics, treatments, procedures, and emergency interventions while ensuring a safe, clean, and biosecure hospital environment.

As a Patient Care Assistant, you will play a vital role in:

Provide comprehensive nursing care to emergency and critical care patients throughout hospitalization.
Monitor patient status, recognize changes in condition, and advocate for patient needs, escalating concerns appropriately.
Administer medications and treatments and perform nursing procedures within scope and according to veterinary orders.
Monitor and manage IV catheters, feeding tubes, bandages, and other patient-support equipment.
Assist with advanced diagnostics, procedures, and treatments, and coordinate patient care and transfers as needed.
Collaborate with veterinarians, specialists, emergency clinicians, and ICU team members to provide coordinated patient care.
Maintain accurate medical records and provide thorough client communication and shift-to-shift handoff, as appropriate.
Provide compassionate, high-quality patient care while maintaining a clean, organized care environment and assuming primary responsibility for the overall care of assigned patients.

Qualifications: Education/Experience: Basic level of horse handling experience required. Preference given to credentialed technicians who have graduated from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology and successfully completed the VTNE.

Language Ability: Ability to understand both written and verbal instructions regarding patient care and treatments. Ability to appropriately chart patient parameters, subjective observations, and independently utilize provided resources for standard operating procedures. Ability to effectively communicate and respond to questions from managers, doctors, and clients.

Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as drug doses, dilutions, percentages, rate, ratio and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, add subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions.

Computer Skills: Computer literacy in common computer software programs.

Special Skills: Equine restraint/handling and horsemanship skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions throughout all four seasons. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and works near moving mechanical parts. Knowledge of MSDS use and personal protective gear including (but not limited to) gloves, masks, respirators, and eyewash stations are required.
