I-Team Ranger

Job Title: Ranger – Investigation Team (I-Team) 

Department: Ski Patrol 

Reports to: Ranger Supervisor 

The I-Team Ranger supports the Ranger Patrol Supervisor in maintaining a safe and responsible mountain environment through guest education, enforcement of the Skiers’ Responsibility Code, and thorough investigation of serious incidents. This position conducts routine mountain patrols, investigates serious and/or fatal accidents, completes detailed reports and supporting documentation, and assists Ski Patrol and other Mountain Operations departments as needed. The I-Team Ranger also supports the training and evaluation of Ranger candidates and may testify in court proceedings when necessary. Paid and volunteer opportunities are available. 

 Key Responsibilities: 

• Conduct routine mountain patrols to educate guests, promote safe skiing and riding practices, and enforce the Skiers’ Responsibility Code. 

• Promote safe and responsible behavior through guest education, communication, and appropriate enforcement of mountain policies. 

• Conduct thorough, in-depth investigations of serious and/or fatal accidents, including gathering statements, photographs, measurements, baseline and scale drawings, and other relevant evidence; prepare and review detailed accident and investigation reports to ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, consistent, and in accordance with established reporting procedures and standards. 

• Testify in court proceedings, when necessary, on behalf of Camelback Mountain Resort. 

• In coordination with Senior Volunteer Ranger Patrol Trainers, assess and evaluate the progress and performance of Ranger candidates, provide guidance and feedback throughout their training, and determine their readiness and ability to perform Ranger duties independently. 

• Coordinate and communicate with the Ranger Patrol Supervisor regarding all matters of mutual interest involving Ski Patrol, Risk Management, Lift Operations, Ski School, and other Mountain Operations departments. 

• Assist and support Ski Patrol when necessary, including during incidents or other situations requiring additional resources. 

• Assist the Ski Patrol/Ranger Patrol Director with daily Ski and Ranger Patrol operations and other functions as required. 

• Maintain a professional, safety-focused presence while interacting with guests, employees, volunteers, and other mountain personnel. 

• Safely operate required equipment and maintain knowledge of applicable mountain safety procedures, policies, and protocols. 

• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications and Requirements: 

• Expert-level skiing ability with the ability to safely navigate diverse terrain and varying weather and environmental conditions. 

• Strong observation, investigative, analytical, and documentation skills. 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

• Ability to gather, document, and communicate information accurately and objectively. 

• Ability to remain calm, professional, and objective when responding to serious or potentially sensitive incidents. 

• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions in the field. 

• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team. 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Ski Patrol, Risk Management, Lift Operations, Ski School, and other Mountain Operations departments. 

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 

• Ability to learn and safely operate required equipment. 

• Ability to understand and follow established safety, investigation, documentation, and reporting procedures. 

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive accident and investigation information. 

• Availability to work weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on mountain operations and business needs. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Previous experience with Ski Patrol, Ranger Patrol, mountain operations, accident investigation, risk management, or a related field. 

• Prior experience conducting or assisting with accident investigations and preparing formal reports. 

• Experience training, mentoring, or evaluating employees or volunteers. 

• First aid, CPR, EMT, or other relevant safety certifications. 

• Experience working in a ski resort or other outdoor recreational environment.
